We went looking at tiles today. I really liked the patterns that had that tumbled stone look to them but Im still concerned about how it will look with the exposed brick wall so close.
And another complication is that the brick we want to expose is still a mystery to us until we tear down the wall - so we dont even know if we will be able to expose it (it might be too cracked or too messed up to expose).
Ugh...not sure what to do. Im going to post some of what we liked if only i can find it on the web. Will be be back.
Stef, what happened to the pictures you were going to post? I have been looking because in one of my magazines I remember a brick wall and them having the tumbled marble. I only remember that because it had the tumbled marble before I put it up. I will keep looking for you, only thing is we keep all our Home magazines and not sure which one it is in....but I will try!

Re: Kitchen Backsplash help...
If you could find that photo for me, please post it..i cant imagine the two together and that is part of the problem. Another problem is that its quite possible the brick under the sheet rock will be in terrible condition and we wont be able to expose it anyway - so we may just have a plain wall after all.
Here is the photo of my kitchen..its 12 feet wide but im showing you the left and right sides which are about 8 feet each. THe 12 foot wall is the back wall of my house that has two windows and a door which is sort of shown in each photo. The back wall is where im hoping the bricks can be exposed.
Left side:
mockup with cabinets and appliances - its messy but you get the idea.

Re: Kitchen Backsplash help...
Stef...if I can offer just one piece of advice...I know your kitchen is tiny, and you're strapped for space...BUT, if there is anyway that you can figure out another place for the microwave other than above the stove - DO IT!
IMO&E, putting the microwave above the stove was THE WORST decision that I made. The exhaust fan does not work well enough, so I am constantly wishing I had a full sized exhaust hood.
Just some advice...like I said, I understand your lack of space...but, just something to think about.
BTW - the mock ups look great so far!

Re: Kitchen Backsplash help...
Claud: Thanks for the tip but as you can see, I have virtually no counter space. Why do you hate it so much? We do not have an exhaust fan now (just a crappy stainless hood) and we have had no problems. So we figure the charcoal filter under a microwave hood would be an improvement on that - am I wrong?
Cooky: The bricks would be on the wall with the windows/door. (on the right in the first photo, left in the second). Our kitchen table goes in the middle of the room as would a nice hanging light.

Re: Kitchen Backsplash help...
Stef: I totally see your lack of space...it was just a tip, incase you could build the micro into a different part of the cabinetry (it doesn't HAVE to be placed over the stove).
To answer your question, my biggest gripe with it is that the fan is virtually USELESS - that is, it is not strong enough to pull the smoke or steam up and away from the stove. This is a huge nuisance to me, since I cook ALOT...but, if you are one who rarely cooks at the stove, you probably won't find it a problem. Just thought I'd mention it anyway.

Re: Kitchen Backsplash help...
Stef, As I was looking for that picture, I came across a brick wall (not in a kitchen) painted a light beige. It looks great. There is no reason if the wall is there you need to keep the bricks that color. A light color will also make you room look bigger. I am trying to post the beige brick wall hope it works. It is in a House Beautiful Mag.

Re: Kitchen Backsplash help...
Claud: We cook several times a week but i think the reason why its not a problem is because our kitchen has a large door and two windows. On those rare occassions when we are cooking up a storm and it gets really warm in there, we just pop the door open and instant exhaust. But its a good tip, none the less.
Cooky: Im not worried about the color of the bricks...as far as im concerned, the older and more worn they look, the better. And i love red and brown brick - that is why i want to expose it. Im concerned about any possible huge cracks or god knows whats under there that a coat of paint will not fix. My house is old and on a crooked block - so it could be a house of horrors behind there. But maybe im just being pessimistic and it will be great. It wouldnt be a total disaster if I cuoldnt do it, I just really love exposed brick and my house is brick so im hoping it can be done.

Re: Kitchen Backsplash help...
Stef, I am having problems putting it on it just sits there. Yes I love natural brick to, just thought I show you in case it is cracked you can still patch it and then paint it and you wouldn't notice it. Actually if I could get the picture on it still looks very rustic painted. I would have never thought of doing it, but it looks real nice.

Honestly I think unless you have an outdoor vented oven hood none of them are really great. That is on my 'dream kitchen' wish list.

Re: Kitchen Backsplash help...
My floors are tiled, and my backsplash is going to be the same tile, olny alot smaller. To add some contrast to the room, the tiled backsplash will be layed diagonally. My floor is layed in straight rows. You can also do tile and add some stainless steel tiles in there for some sontrast as well.
