Kittens??

Kittens??

I want a pet so bad. I originally wanted a PUg, but Danielle's mom who is our landlord said we cannot have a dog, but we can have a cat if we want to. The problem with that is that we have brand new micro fiber furniture and I don't want a cat to scratch and claw it. I would love to get a kitten though....Don't know what I should do....Danielle feels the same way...And we dont believe in declawing the cat....
Argh...

Re: Kittens??

They make *nail caps* for indoor cats....they are small protective caps that are put on the claws to prevent serious damage. You can find them in the Dr. Fosters & Smith catalogue.

Here's the link:
Claw Covers

Just a note: Iuse this company quite regularly & they have great customer service....If you want to speak with someone before ordering they are usually pretty helpful.

ETA: my sister also does not beleive in declawing, especially if the cat is older. The only thing here is that they have to be replaced when the claw grows out (b/c they cannot trim their own claws with them on) and you have to trim their claws. She did this for the first 2 years, I think, then the cats lost their desire to claw furniture, walls, etc.

Good Luck!

You can train the cat not to scratch...starting when you get it. Get a scratching board and some other toys and cat furniture...when you see the kitten on your couch about to scratch you spray it with a water bottle....that will get them running! Doing this early on I think is key!!!

We wanted a dog too, but for reasons got a cat. I love my Chloe more than I thought I ever would!!!

If you get kitty a scratching post, you should be fine. Oh, and a water bottle. We would spray our boys when they tried to and after a while they saw the water bottle and ran. And may I suggest TWO kitties. I promise you, two is better than one. Ours are always hanging out and do everything together and don't feel the need to bite or scratch us or destroy the apartment. It is just as easy as caring for one cat, even easier I think.

Declawing is very painful for a kitty!!!

I agree! I saw how my old roomates cat was really bored and destructive by herself. Our two really keep eachother busy- mostly having WWF-like wrestling matches in the livingroom.

I also suggest not getting a carpet scratch post. If they are allowed to scratch that, and you get carpet later on, they will think its okay to scratch your carpet too.

It is hard enough trying to convice Danielle to get one cat, now you want me to get 2 lol.

Is there any breed of cat that is better than another?

I have a 3 cat household...I don't think that there is a 'better' breed of cat. I would suggest getting 2 from a shelter. We have a short haired gray cat (13), a salmon & white fluffy but short haired cat (2), and a black/white Long haired cat (2). Here's a pic of the long haired girl. Our cats are hysterical to us. We always find them sleeping in sinks and showers especially if they were recently used...Go figure!

You will LOVE being a cat owner!!!! Definitely get 2. Mine sleep together and play together. They are brother & Sister. The boy torchers my older cat although I think they secretly love each other

Just bring them home and she'll be in love. Or bring her to NSAL, if there are 2 in a cage, they make you take both.

You cna have one of my cats. He's already declawed so you dont have to feel guilty!

ETA: We have rescued many cats and now the older ones and getting sick and old and t's too much work and they dont get enough attention, so we need to find homes for the younger ones.

Grooming yes, they clean eachother's ears, heads, (butts), everything. And they just don't destroy things and are so happy to have eachother.

Just my experience: Siamese cats are INSANE!! We had one a long time ago who would hallucinate and run insanely around the apt. The vet said that their eyes dialate too much and get too much light in them. So he reacted as if he was seeing things. It was amusing sort of. But he was also very high strung and a bit of a pain.

I prefer x-breed cats. They're more intelligent and more friendly. JMO

tp329...your babies are so cute in your avatar!!! I remember when I could hold mine in my hands!

My DH and I laugh because when we go over people's houses we talk about our cats like they were our children!!

Everyone told me to get 2 cats...and they still do. I have 1 and she is great. Maybe down the line I will get another but for now I have enough hair to clean up everywhere!!!

She gets a lot of attention & is extremely playful. If I don't give her attention she gets in my face and begs for it....but I love playing with her...and she is definitely a mamas girl!!!

I would get a cat from a shelter....there are just so many that need homes!

Thanks! They are a year old now. Ha ha, so do we! People laugh at FH because he is a 6'4 monster but picks up our boys and talks to them like babies and gives them kisses.

It is safe to say we are both obsessed with them.
