Knights of Columbus - what do you think? UPDATE Pg 2
Original post by ZuzusPetals
Ok so my FI and I have been dating since HS and we recently just got engaged. We are both relatively young. We’re 22 now and are planning a wedding for Dec 14, 2007 in 2 years. We both have a large family and have many friends that are really special to us and we do NOT want to skimp on the guest list. My dad is giving us a sum of money and we do have two years to save however I think considering our rather young age, the fact that were new in our careers, and that living expenses are so outrageous on long island that having our wedding at the K of C in Oceanside or Seaford is our best option. Im going to a wedding at the one in Oceanside in April and I look forward to it. Many people have told me great things about that places and it holds 200 people the one in Seaford holds up to 300 people. We will prob. end up with the one at Seaford because I know we will have more than 200 people.
So my question is: 1) Have you ever been to any of these locations? 2) If so, how was the experience?
I am sure this type of venue is NOT everyones “cup of tea” and I would love to have our reception at some of the amazing places many of you are but I just don’t want to go into debt for our wedding and since my dad is giving us 25,000 I really want to work within that budget. So, what do you think?

If I were you I would not rule out a hall as there are many halls that are less expensive if you have your wedding on a sunday sfternoon or evening or I have also seen some people do them on a thursday night, also some halls for just your basic dinner I have heard can be $50-$60 a person, good luck

one of my bms got married there oceanside knights of columbus and i have to say the food was great and we had so much fun at this wedding!!!!! you do what you have to do to have the wedding you want. it will be awsome!!!!! good luck!!!
The K of C in Oceanside is beautiful! Plus, I think they include a centerpiece. My sister's friend had her wedding there and they had a ball. Plus, I think they also have a lounge for your guests to relax as well. I would say check it out. However, you might find some catering halls with comparable pricing if you are flexible about your day and time. So, I would suggest looking at K of C. and then checking out a couple of other halls.
Good luck!

Try not to worry about what other people will think...remember it is yours and FH's day! Do lots of research too. With two years to plan you have plenty of time. Make sure to consider all your options...I think you might be surprised how affordable it may be, especially in a more off-season month. In the end, if you find the KOC is the best choice, go for it!!!! Good luckand happy planning!!
PS...remember to negotiate everything!!!! It doesn't hurt to ask for what you want...the worst anyone can say is no!

Re: Knights of Columbus - what do you think?
I totally understand where you are coming from and agree 100% I am 23 now and FH and I are paying for 90% of the wedding - he also has a huge family and we wanted everyone to be part of our day. Even with all the corners we cut we are having a difficult time paying for the wedding and we refuse to go into debt over a 5 hour event.
The K of C in Seaford is very nice!! That actually is the hall my father belongs to and I have been to many events there - i was actually going to have my wedding there but my mom fell in love with my hall and wanted to go somewhere she doesnt see every week (she is a columbiette (sp?))
If you have any questions or want a tour let me know!!
Oceanside is also very nice!!
ETA: I post before i read the rest of the comments (bad habit i know) but i just had to add 25K is probably more than the cost of my entire wedding right now - you could look elsewhere for halls if you want but the little things really add up quickly and it's nice to have money after the wedding or spend extra on photography or honeymoon - we spent more on the hall as a gift to our guests and flowers and an expensive band all for our guests and now we had to cancel our rings (ordered titanium rings - $49 each online) we currently have no honeymoon - and worse an apartment with no furniture and i really wanted bo-k preservation!! I really wish we had been wiser with our budget.

Re: Knights of Columbus - what do you think?
I don't know anything about K of C but let's do some math.... if your budget is $25,000 then let's say that you can spend $15,000 on the reception venue. That leaves $10,000 for all you other vendors which is totally doable. If you have 200 people then it works out to about $75 per person which is about $60 without gratuity and tax. You can find plenty of venues for $60 a person - you may need to have a daytime wedding or on a Fri or Sun but don't pigeonhole yourself this early in the game. Look around first so that you don't regret your decision later. Not that K of C is bad b/c I don't know either way but keep your options open!

Thank You all for you input and helfpul advice. I appreciate it! I will def. explore other options but I will also NOT exclude K of C becasue on here and through FM I received many wonderful reviews of weddings that several of you have been to at some K of C's. Thanks again I really appreciate it! One thing is for sure - I will be marrying the love of my life in 2 years and I know that in itself will be something I will never forget.

Re: Knights of Columbus - what do you think?
you are smart to explore all your options! there are many places that you can get a great price per person on, especially if you marry in the off season and not on a sat night. my fi and i are also young, he will be 22 and i will be almost 22 by the time our day comes around. we are lucky to have $10,000 from his parents, but that's it, the rest is on us. if we stick to our budget we will stay under $25,000 total (but for less people than you, around 75-100). we have been saving since we got engaged and are half way there to where we need to be financially to have our wedding debt free. we are by no means wealthy people, i am a fulltime student who works in daycare by day and he has a fulltime job that pays him just good enough so we can afford our apartment and food with a little left over. what i am tryign to say is you might be able to save more than you think for you big day, if thats something you want to do. best of luck! ~lacey

I think you should do what you want to do. I think you should price the K of C and some halls. You may be surprised that one some days like holidays you can get great prices. I would not rule out anything. It's your day, so its your decision.
If I could stop planning and get refunds, I would elope. It is getting way out of hand.

Re: Knights of Columbus - what do you think?
My future stepdaughter had her confirmation party at a KofC out east - maybe there are different ones, but this place did not look appropriate for a wedding - are their nice ones around?

Let me tell you that young has nothing to do with it - my FH is 42, and I'm 32. We hardly have enough money to pay the rent of our house - if my dad wasn't paying for the wedding, we wouldn't even be able to afford KofC!!! He has child support and a ton of debt (I have debt too)
If you don't have money, you can't do much with anything - good luck...

Re: Knights of Columbus - what do you think?
A friend of mine got married at the Knights of Columbus in Oceanside. I had a BLAST about the wedding. the place was fine... not dingy and 'old man bar' like you mgiht think. it was very nice. the food was good, although the drinks weren't fantastic.... nto sure if she hired out a bartender or if he was with the place. a good wedding is about your friends and family, not necessarily the place.
FYI: my friend got married in 2003 and she said she paid $50.00 a head. I am getting married in 2007 and paying close to that for the Stewart Manor COuntry Club a really nice place that does lots of weddings. ---I LOVE it and it's reasonable as me and FH are on a tight budget as well. FM if you want details.

Re: Knights of Columbus - what do you think?
I have been to both and both are great. The Oceanside K of C I remember as being beautiful. My brother had his reception at the Seaford K of C and it was probably the most fun wedding ever. I'd go see them. They are NOT what a lot of people think. And yeah, compare them against some of the more inexpensive halls. You'll know what's right for you in the end.

I have been to both and they are both BEAUTIFUL- its not what people think of the ol vfw halls.
First off - you DO NOT H AVE TO DO A DAMN THING-
THEY PROVIDE FOOD, CHINA- YES CHINA, CP, COLD APPETIZERS, 6 HOT BUFFETS OR SIT DOWN, 2 CARVING STATIONS, OPEN BAR, LINEN CHOICE AND CAKE!
IMO the one in Oceanside is nicer. the memore in seaford, they have different names than just knights of columbus, is big and beautiful but the parking *****!!! Oceanside has a HUGE parking lot AND when you pull in the long driveway all the trees are lit up at night, really beautiful AND the food is AWESOME in both!
These 2 halls are just as beautiful as your catering/wedding hall believe it or not. I only know of these 2.
Good Luck and you are very smart to do it- Oceanside for a sat night min is 150 and it is 32pp , and seaford min for sat is 100 and 38-40 pp plus tax and 18% gratuity. the oceanside one didnt say anything about grartuity.
I know all of this b/c my girlfriends brother is getting married there this yr in oceanside and I called them both for my DH's 30th bday party.
with the prices of everything else, trust me 25k is not enough when everything is said and done. you are def smart- that 25k could even go towards your HM too if you do the knights of columbus.

My sister just went to a wedding at the one in Seaford, and she had a great time! She also said the food was very good.
I think it is fine to have it at a Knights of Columbus. You can do what ever you guys want, its your wedding.
Since it is two years away, I would look around at other venues. Some might suprise you, that they are in your price range.
Good Luck!!

Thank you for that! I'm going to check the KofC in Seaford on Saturday and Oceanside sometime next week. Thanks for the support too!
