In the city or out on LI? I go to Close Knit in Bay Ridge, but that might be too out of your way.

Would Need LI...

Did anyone learn from a book/CD/Video or are classes the better route?

I did books and online videos, and taught myself. It was very confusing at first, but once I got the hang of it and kept practicing it became easier. The books are kinda hard to understand with the still pictures. The videos I found online helped alot because you get to see the movement. I would recommend using the 2 together.

Someone showed me the basics and I learned the rest from books.

I took a knitting class a couple of years ago at Gotta Knit, downtown. It was great! Then I bought myself a crochet book and taught myself to crochet.
Does Garden City Stitches have classes?

I was just at Michaels yesterday. They are offering a beginner's knitting class either 12th or 13 (not sure) at 6:30-8:30. This is at the westbury location near roosevelt field. I think the class is $15 plus supplies. They also have a crochet class, but I dont remember that info.

There is also a yarn store in Valley Stream on Rockaway Blvd, and I think they have classes. (It is about two blocks south of Cafe Napoli...) Sorry, can't remember the name of the store
But Michaels' has been advertising that they are having classes.

Where on LI do you live? I work for Michaels (@ Roosevelt Raceway) and we do offer knitting and crocheting classes. Each store is in charge of their own calendar of events, but if you told me where you were I could find out which stores offer them for ya.
If it isn't too far, our store in Westbury has wonderful knitting and crocheting instructors and our classes always fill up! Let me know!

I agree that nothing will take the place of classes. However, if that doesn't work for you there is a site that helped me brush up on my stitches. This may help you.

http://www.stitchguide.com/stitches/crochet/index.html

There also are knitting videos there. If you go to their home page I'm sure you'll find them.

I believe that Knitting Cove in Port Jefferson offers classes. (That's where my mom and me buy our yarn. My mom has been shopping there for years.) Also- if you are beginning to knit and just need help figuring something out, they'll help you. I see them helping people all the time. The store is on East Main Street in the village.

Well, yes and no. I tried learning from a book and that didn't help me AT ALL! Now, after the classes (3) I know all the basics. I know how to do all the stitches but I still haven't tried to follow a pattern, and I'm not sure if I can. My mom used to be able to crochet and she took the classes with me so I'm hoping she can help me when I want to make a pattern. Right now I'm working on a baby blanket without a pattern
