Knives as gifts

FMIL told me it's bad luck to receive knives as a gift. What is bad luck about it?

hmmm....maybe that's why nobody's buying them off our registry! hehe.....I hope that's not the case, knives are so expensive, I'd rather have someone else buy them for me!

in the chinese culture you have to give the person who gave them to you money. i have never heard of it as bad luck.

I heard this too, my moms friends bought us our knife set and made me give her a penny so it was like I was buying them from her instead of her gifting me the knives. I have no idea why it's bad luck but I might do some investigative work

eta: I found an article!

Yeah, she got a set of cheap knives with her Omaha Steaks and decided they'd be great for us and had FH give her a quarter. I'm not keeping the knives, I want the ones on my registry!

If a friend gives you a knife, you should give him a coin, or your friendship will soon be broken.

My friend gave someone a knife for her shower gift!

seriously strange, Macys would not allow us to add any knives to our registry in the store. It was like bad karma voodoo or something!

I never heard this till my shower. Apparently if you give knives, you're supposed to give a penny with them to counter the bad luck...whatever!!

HAHA, really? We have a set on our Macys registry! I'll just make sure I bring a quarter and give it to the person.

Re: Knives as gifts

well - i know the 'irish' cure all for this is you have to give the recipient a 'penny for every point' that you give. as it 'neutralizes' the cut of the blade.....lolol so if theres 8 knives, one fork and one pair of kitchen shears you give 12 pennies - usually taped to the block or the box . then you're supposed to keep the pennies near the knives for a year ....
lol - leave it to the irish :)

Yeah, in my family (and many other Italian families) it is bad luck to get knives as a gift. So if you receive knives, you have to give a penny to the person who gave it to you. Then it's like you paid them for it (not making it a gift). I know it sounds silly (a superstition).

My brother received a set of knives for his wedding (actually it was at the bridal shower) and he's been happily married for over 5 years with a beautiful 16-month-old boy
