Labels for invites?

Original post by itsbouttime

Hi ladies! One of my BM's is getting married in August. Her invites should be in anyday and she just asked me a question that i thought i would put past all of you. She was thinking of doing clear labels w/ the printed addresses. She wanted to know if this was tacky? I've never heard of this but that doesn't mean much. Anyone else do this?

Sorry. It looks awful. I got an invite like that. Your invite is the first thing most people see of your wedding plans- it should reflect the type of event you want to have. I know it is a lot easier to print a label BUT take the time and make your invites look nice. It is worth it.

My girlfriend and I had a talk about the label issue today. I don't think it really matters..I agree if your family judges you because of labels and not handwriting then they need to move into to computer age! I have so many other things to worry about..clear labels really helped get my invites out fast and easily!

I agree I like clear invites - I don't know why they would be tacky - maybe I could see the white ones being a bit out there - but I think clear looks just as nice as caligraphy - most people throw it out anyway - they keep the directions and the inner envilope with the invite. At least, that is what my family does

i am definitely going to do clear labels. we're inviting 500+ people .. im not about to spend the money or write 'em out by hand. i think clear labels look fine.. people look at your invitations, not the outer envelope. as long your invites look nice and classy or whatever you want, i dont think the label matters. hell i throw out every envelope i get and just save the invite!

I would strongly suggest trying to print your addresses on your computer - its just as easy as the labels but looks a lot nicer! If you use a calligraphy font, it will look handwritten!

IMHO using labels on wedding invitations is TACKY! I am using my computer, but I am printing right onto the envelopes. I made sure to order extra envelopes (25 outer and 25 inner) for a total of about $10 extra. Probably about the same price you would pay for the labels and IMO it looks SO much nicer. I just received an invitation with clear labels and thought they looked terrible. Again, JMO.

If you decide to put the envelope through the printer, just be careful. The envelopes with liners in it, don't always run smoothly through the printer.

The last few invitations I got had the clear labels on them and I thought they looked fine. I would be doing the same if my step sister didn't offer to do mine.

I was thinking of using clear labels also, but since almost everyone says it's tacky, i'm afraid to now. Does anyone know of a calligrapher who is fairly cheap?

I just zipped the envelopes through the printer. It took a while to get the hang of it, but once we got a system down, it went pretty quickly.

Call me tacky then!! I never even noticed this stuff til I started planning my own wedding & reading wedding message boards. But now that I see someone does it for 39 cents/envelope I may consider doing it myself. But I wouldn't waste $ paying much more than that.

I apologize in advance if I offend here, but think people who notice that a clear label as opposed to calligraphy or whatever just have entirely too much time on their hands. WHO CARES???!!! But I guess its also about what kinda circles you run in, too.

I don't understand how its not 'personal' enough to use a clear label??? Just the fact that you receive an invitation to someone's wedding is a personal thing!!

i just went out and bought my clear labels

I don't think people will 'judge' you ...but IMO I feel that handwriting an invitation says that you took the time to invite this guest personally...thats how much they mean to you to invite them...

who wants to be an address in a computer data bank?

Re: Labels for invites?

how is giving your invitations to a calligrapher any more personal than printing the labels?

at least with the lables you're personally doing it - with the calligrapher you're just paying someone else to. not very personal.

i.e. it doesnt matter!!!

Re: Labels for invites?

My brother used clear labels for his invites. I thought they looked fine. We actully put ours through the printer probably in big part because i was afraid of being judged, but also cause I was able to make it a bit bigger. But, the thing that bothers me about saying how impersonal using labels is, is what is so personal about sending invitations with your list to pay someone else to write them out. If you can do it yourself, I think that is great but I don't see that it takes any more time to send it out and have it done than to put on a label. I couldn't have written mine out - well, I could but my handwriting is so horrendous that I would just be too embarrassed for anyone to see it.

Re: Labels for invites?

wait a minute ladies!!!

I never talked about sending out invites...

I handwrote each and every one of my invites...the guests addresses and our return address!!! I also did this with the STD cards...and the thank yous...

Its just something that I felt strongly about...I think even bad handwriting is more personal than sending out invites to a calligrapher...although I think with a little time and practice, most people can have nice looking handwriting

again this is JMO

yabbobay - I didn't mean to sound like that was directly at you. I have seen this argument before and I guess that was really what I was thinking of. Like I said, if you wrote them all out, that is awesome and I'm sure took A LOT of hard work on your part!! I give you a lot of credit.
BTW - you can say that with practice anyone can make it look nice, but seriously, even my best friend makes fun of my handwriting. Anytime she gets a letter from me, she says she thinks it looks like a 6 year old boy wrote it out.

Re: Labels for invites?

pamela...try going to CVS and get a calligraphy marker...(its not the greatest...but you can use it to experiment)...the angle really helps where a ballpoint doesn't give the same effect...

if you think you could be good...then you can get a real calligraphy pen (which aren't that expensive) to do...

same here yabbobay =)

i just meant to compare the labels to those who send them out to a calligrapher
