Lamest excuses you got from people not coming to your wedding?

Lamest excuses you got from people not coming to your wedding?

We got two pretty lame ones:

One guy's wife said they can't come to the wedding b/c he doesn't own a suit. Mind you, he said he owns a sports jacket (which would be fine with us if that's what he has!), but his wife said that wasn't good enough. These are good friends of FH's parents.

Another person who lives in NYC said she's not coming b/c she doesn't feel like driving and she's not sure how to get there by public transportation. I offered to get public transportation directions for her and she said no. It's fine if she just didn't want to come -- but she had to give me this lame excuse b/c she never RSVP'd to the wedding. Had she RSVP'd that she wasn't coming, I wouldn't have had to ask her about it.

Oh Man!!! I am sorry that you have to deal with that. Too bad they couldn't come up with a better 'reason!'

MIL's cousin called, after they RSVPed yes, and said they couldn't come because her husband was having back problems and he couldn't sit in the car that long (they live in Westchester). She called a week or so later to chat and mentioned that her husband was going fishing in Montauk either the weekend of our wedding or the weekend after W T F?

ETA: MIL barely talks to this cousin now because she's so annoyed.

We had another one that was pretty bad from one of DH's friends but, I'm drawing a blank right now...

Oh, one of his friend's couldn't come because he needed to schedule a 3rd b-day party for his kid and he couldn't do it on a Sunday because his wife's family gets too drunk.

It's okay - for every lame excuse, we have someone awesome going out of their way to be there. One of my mom's good friends has her nephew's wedding the same day. Originally, she told my mom (right after we sent out STDs) that she wouldn't be able to make it.

Aft er the shower, she told my mom that she had so much fun at the shower, she will NOT miss the wedding. It turns out her nephew is getting married earlier in the day than we are and she and her husband are going to BOTH weddings. I was so excited when I got a 'yes' RSVP!

Wow, some of the whoppers people come up with are impressive. I haven't done the invite thing yet, so I can't share any (inevitable) funny RSVPs yet, but I can tell you that a secretary in my office called in sick recently because her hair dryer was broken so she couldn't do her hair. People are nuts.

Working the next day was probably the most common excuse used otherwise there was no reason given at all.

I'm sorry, but I can't believe these people are serious with these excuses!! OMG how ridiculous 'I don't have a suit' & 'I don't want to drive and I'm too dopey to know how to take Public Transportation' SHEESH!!!

Can't wait for the excuses that come my way!

Those excuses are too much. The 2nd one bugs me. Come on. Its only a 50 minute commute from Penn? Give me a break. I'm sure I'll hear some good ones in a few weeks.

I would just rather they said no.

No need for an excuse with me... the more NOs I get the more friends I get to invite..

(my family is taking up my whole guest list)

Re: Lamest excuses you got from people not coming to your wedding?

Scary thing is that the suit excuse is real. That is really the reason this guy's wife is saying they can't go. I think he really wants to go, and she's being really obnoxious about it. I think they are (sadly) having some problems. His wife is a drama queen and doing this for attention or to be mean to him. It's really sad.

The only reason I know this is b/c we feared the RSVP was a mistake. The week before we got it, we saw them. They were talking up a storm about how they were all ready to come to our wedding. So we asked FMIL if it was legit. She knew nothing about it, but the next time she saw them, the suit excuse just came out -- without her asking.

The funny thing is that we'd never ask for an excuse. Say no - it's FINE. I'd never ask WHY! I understand you may not want to come to our wedding or may be unable.... no excuses necessary. We'll miss you, but we won't harass you about it!

Kara, I'm being totally serious w/this response, Walmart has suits for $56.00. I told my old school 70 year single uncle to go there and I think he is.

Re: Lamest excuses you got from people not coming to your wedding?

4 of our friends who have to do EVERYTHING together (two cousins and their significant others) couldn't come, cause their parents every year for the past like 25 years always rent a beach house in florida --- and this year it just so happened their annual trip fell around the time of the wedding. (its a 3 wk thing) well they couldn't come cause since ONE of the four doesn't like to fly, they had to drive down.....and although they could have driven down to FL the day AFTER our wedding.....because they wanted a ride with one of their brothers....he had to leave 2 days before our wedding, which meant all FOUR of them had to leave 2 days before the wedding.

i thought it was a crap excuse....god forbid they are 3 days late for the 3 wks vacation.....and have to take their *gasp* OWN cars!!!

Re: Lamest excuses you got from people not coming to your wedding?

This is not related to my wedding, but I had to share...

My FH's BM and his wife noticed at their reception last August that a guest who was a good friend of theirs and had RSVP'd yes (with a guest) wasn't present.
So after the wedding they called up their friend to make sure she was OK or find out what had happened. The friend tells them, get this, 'Oh yeah, I'm sorry about that, I woke up late and didn't feel like coming.'

Needless to say I don't think they are friends anymore.

I know -- and the other thing we said was that he can just come in a sports jacket. It's fine! It's not like he'd show up in sandals.

Sadly, his wife is nuts and we think she's doing this to be mean or something.

I'd never tell family or friends they can't come because they don't have a suit, especially when they have something equally as acceptable.

They are OOSers and his wife I guess has this glamorous 'NY Wedding' fantasy. Sure, most people will (hopefully) be wearing suits, but everyone will be taking off their jackets, etc. A sportscoat is fine!

Oh well. It's a bummer, but definitely told his mom to tell them if they change their mind (soon!) that a sports coat is fine!
