Lasik eye surgery

Lasik eye surgery

I'm considering this, only because I'm so dependant on my contacts, and I really don't like wearing glasses. I had a consult today, and they said there's no pain.

Has anyone done this or have friends/family who've done it?

I would definatly do some research on it.

I spoke to my eye care provider (as I too am very dependant on my contacts but because I wear disposable and I dont have a lot of funds to re-order I've been wearing my glasses) and she said I am a candidate but to do some major research about it.

Who does it, is it covered by insurance, how long is the procedure, whats the recovery time, how long do the results last for (some say it lasts a long time but when you get older your eyes will be a lot worse)

My friend swears by it but he said he did about a years worth of research before going throguh with it.

I am considering it next year for my wedding this way I dont have to worry about contacts and glasses for my wedding and honeymoon

What about pain.........I heard from a few that it's not painful, they just feel pressure.

i was told it's not painful, done in 1/2 an hour, and you are up to par within a day!

Re: Lasik eye surgery

My mother had it done, and had some issues. She went to 'the best' dr. in the city, and had a few problems. She wore glasses her whole life.

First, she woke up the next day and could see as clear as anything- she couldn't even believe it- she said it was amazing. By that night, her vision was blurry again. She called the dr. and he said- yea, that's normal. It always starts clear, but doesn't stay that way. (he couldn't have told her that before so she could expect it?)

second, her tear ducts had to be clogged with little plastic pieces for over a month (not sure why)

She still wears glasses, but not as strong as before, and can get away without them to walk around, but not actually do anything.

I have also heard people say great things, just wanted to tell you what happened to mom!

my sister had it done and loves it. she had no problems, her vision is perfect. she said it took about 15 minutes to have the procedure done. her bf had it done and he did have some blurred vision for a while, and he would still recommend having it done!

Re: Lasik eye surgery

sunny thanks for the flip side of things

I've been doing research on this for about 2 years

I am still scared about doing it for reasons that happened to your mom. Sometimes I think its just better to have my contacts and glasses

Its still a consideration but I know I am going to wind up chickening out and just continue to wear the contacts and glasses

Re: Lasik eye surgery

Thanks ladies. The Optomologist I saw today said that I was a good candidate, blah blah...I've been thinking about it for a long time now, because I definately OVERUSE my contacts, which sometimes results in viruses in my eye which are very painful.

The MD said he'd even give me a valium to calm me down before the procedure because I told him I'm a huge chicken!

I should do it just for the valium, ha ha!!!!!

I had it done about 2 years ago - LOVE it!!

there was no pain during the procedure, but it was a little uncomfortable (you eye is held open pretty far). Recovery had some pain - there was a point a few hours later where any light BURNED intensly. I locked myself in the bathroom (only room without windows) for a few minutes, and then I was fine.

The evening of my surgery, I could already see clearly. My DH watched the whole thing.

I didn't think I'd need the valium, but the day of, I ended up taking it. I was a little freaked out.

Heck, since we're dealing with a lazer, why not throw in the lazer hair removal while I'm there...two for one!

Re: Lasik eye surgery

I actually went for a lazer hair removal consult, and let me tell you....it f***ing hurt! I think I was such a baby about it because the MD said, it doesn't hurt at all, you hardly even feel it...yeah, maybe on someone's arm, but not bikini!

I would get a few opinions before I would get it done. I've read that not everyone is a good candidate for it, but unfortunately there are some doctors our there who will recommend it anyway to make $ and those are the people who don't have great results. I would love to get it, but I'm a big wimp when it comes to those things.

FH had it and loved it... You get very sensitive to light for the first 48 hrs, and in general your sensitivity to light increases. But overall, it didn't hurt him.

As for hair removal, I went also to one of the best Dr's for that (I chose to go to a Dermatologist, vs having it administered by a licensed laser person), and not only was the hair removal par hurtfull, like prolonged and sharp bee stings, it also didn't work for me after 4 treatments. And I was 'the perfect candidate' with light skin and dark hair...

I used to work for an opthomologist who was one of the founders of the surgery, and I can tell you I have seen his results and NOONE has had a problem yet! I even had my own father go to him, and I am going next year (after I get a REAL job and can afford it). FM me if you want any more info. Good luck.

Re: Lasik eye surgery

My sister and my brother in law both had it done (my other brother in law is an eye surgeon). When my sister had it done, she came home and slept for a while. When she got up the next day, she drove herself to Ridge for her follow-up appt (w/o contacts or glasses). Neither of them complained of any pain. I think I am going to get it done later this year or early next year.

Re: Lasik eye surgery

I had this done last February and I cannot tell you how amazing it is!!!! I was a very good candidate and it was the easiest procedure - it takes less than 30 minutes and I wound up not even needing the valium I was so relaxed. That night I could see 20/20. I would HIGHLY recommend Dr Mark Speaker on 57th Street. They make you feel so comfortable about the procedure and are fanatics about you coming back the next day, the next week, the next month to track your progress. FM me if you need any other info.
