I'm having a major 'changing my name' problem. I think FH is really sad that I don't want to take his last name. I know that it is 'an honor' to take it, etc., etc. But, I have a really rich family history and I LOVE my last name. I want to keep it. I don't know how else to explain it. I'm proud of where I come from, I guess. Originally I was just thinking of keeping it for professional purposes (I'm going to be an atty), but now I'm feeling like I'd like to keep it all around. I am OK with the idea of going hyphenated or just having two last names, but FH is not thrilled. Am I being ridiculous?
ETA: Just wanted to say - when I said 'rich family history' I didn't mean that we're the Hiltons or oil moguls, lol. I don't think anyone read it that way, but just wanted to make sure. I meant we have an interesting and unique background, filled with a lot of previous struggle/triumph.

Re: Last Name Drama
I have never wanted to change my last name for as long as I can remember and thankfully, FH is cool with it. Just as long as our kids have his name and I at least answer to it, he doesn't care.

I don’t think that’s ridiculous at all! I, on the other hand, am a complete nut—I’m trying to get FH to change his last name to his mother’s maiden name (his grandfather asked and it’s a big deal to him) because I like that name more than FH’s current last name and my last name!

Well lets see, compromise is part of marriage. If you dont want it and he wants you to take it then why cant it be hyphenated. That would be the common ground. Tell him take it or leave it. I personally want to take the name especially when I think of having children.
My vote hyphenate it

You are not being ridiculous. I don't want to get rid of my last name and FH is having a hissy fit about it. I mean it's really disrespectful of him if you ask me. I legally want to keep in Mrs. B-C and he just wants it Mrs. C for no good reason. Meanwhile, my sister and I die with our last names so why should I have to give it up any sooner? It's not like our kids would be B-C. UGHHHHHHH
Yeah I mean FH isn't being a jerk about it - he's being mopey. It's almost worse that way to be honest!!! I feel like I'm hurting him/letting him down. I know some kids with hyphenated names and they have a hard time, so I wouldn't do that. But, I said I wanted all our kids to have my last name as their middle names. My Aunt and good friend did this. FH was like 'WHAT?! I want our kids to all have their own middle name!' I just don't understand why HE doesn't understand the concept of being attached to your own last name?!
ETA: Wow, I feel better now that I got that out!
I have a very good friend who had her middle name changed to her maiden name(like what u said about ur future children).... I have another friend is going through the same thing as you(comes from a very rich family backround & wanted to keep it)...she realized that she was hurting her FH & decided to go with the change because she couldn't stand him being bummed out anymore and to her, making her FH happy was more important to her than seeing him hurt(but i guess it could go the other way too...ie: him making YOU happy and respecting that YOU want to keep ur name lol. it's really a double edged sword!).....i dunno! it's a tough one! I personally was SO excited to take DH's last name but everyone is different i guess. I think to a man, it's dissapointing when your wife doesn't want to take your last name because you're supposed to be 'given away' to them....(why they get upset about it dont know!)..my friend who i mentioned previously ended up changing because FH said 'Well i dont get it - ur making me feel like my last name is worthless and that's why u don't want it' ...lol sorry if that just came out wrong - i'm not trying to make u feel bad at all - i'm just trying to see it from both sides of the situation! ANYWAYS, would u consider taking ur maiden name as your middle name(or even a second middle name?)....this might be a nice compromise that would make both of you feel a little better about all of it. good luck with the whole situation!

I don't think you are being ridiculous at all. Changing your name is a big deal and can be a very diffciult decision to make. I have always thought I would take my husbands last name because of the honor and as a symbol of our new family, but now that it is here I'm having some difficulty getting used to the idea. I have had my name for 33 years and I really like it.
I can understand your FHs diappointment, but if it is something you really want, he'll come around.

I don't want to change my last name either but FH gets really upset and offended by it - he says changing the name completes us becoming one..when he put it that way I felt bad..
I still think I am going to keep mine for business purposes. That is important to me.

I'm in the same boat..my last name has given me so many problems growing up! I'm 100% italian, however the way its spelt (it was changed when my grandfather came over from Italy) make it look like i'm greek. so anyone i've ever met has made some sort of comment about me being greek (nothing against greeks!, believe me) and not to mention not ONE person has ever pronounced it right. I think even FH gets it wrong sometimes lol So I can't wait until I take over his nice, short, easy to pronounce Irish last name!

Re: Last Name Drama
FH and I had this same issue. I wanted to keep my name because I'm and only child and so is my dad so my last name kind of ends with me. FH freaked about it, felt very strongly that I take it. So, when I go to legally change everything, I'm legally changing my middle name to my last name and my last name to his name. So my full name will be both of our last names and it doesn't insult/bother him and it's a nice compromise because my last name is still an important piece of my name.

Re: Last Name Drama
Well, this is one of my struggles too...
I changed my name on the marriage certificate, but nothing else. I told DH that I was having second thoughts about it and said he was ok with it, but keeps dropping hints that he is not. I don't know what to do.

Re: Last Name Drama
You are definately not being ridiculous. I feel the same way as you. When I told FH that I was not going to change my name, he was very hurt. But I stuck to my guns and explained that it was a very large part of who I am and he eventually came around. I know that I would have regretted changing my name, so this was not negotiable for me.
I think that whatever decision women make on this, they need to be sure that they are comfortable and can live with it.

If his concern is about you becoming 'one, tell him to change his last name to yours....he'll change his tune real fast!
