I'm having a major 'changing my name' problem. I think FH is really sad that I don't want to take his last name. I know that it is 'an honor' to take it, etc., etc. But, I have a really rich family history and I LOVE my last name. I want to keep it. I don't know how else to explain it. I'm proud of where I come from, I guess. Originally I was just thinking of keeping it for professional purposes (I'm going to be an atty), but now I'm feeling like I'd like to keep it all around. I am OK with the idea of going hyphenated or just having two last names, but FH is not thrilled. Am I being ridiculous?
ETA: Just wanted to say - when I said 'rich family history' I didn't mean that we're the Hiltons or oil moguls, lol. I don't think anyone read it that way, but just wanted to make sure. I meant we have an interesting and unique background, filled with a lot of previous struggle/triumph.

oy - i didnt want to give up my last name either, but i did - same boat - with the attorney thing - but then i did it before i graduated undergrad - so its all the same now - this is my last year of law school - going to be taking the bar next summer - which is why we are waiting to do our vow renewal until after that is over with - i couldnt handle bar and wedding all at once!
Sounds like we're in the same year in school - where do you go?
I go to Touro
Ahhh - I live in Huntington so you're right around the block from me! I go to St. John's Law though.
its not in huntington anymore - its in Central Islip - but I Live in HUNTINGTON too! :)
i went to Touro because I lived in Shirley at the time....then i moved to huntington and it moved to central islip....

I don't think you're being ridiculous at all. I don't want to change my name either. I like my last name and am not all that crazy over FHs. I also really don't want to take the name of his family considering they're all crazy! He was adamant about it, and then when we started talking kiddies and names, he mentioned he wanted a Jr, which is is also adamant about. I am so anti-juniors that I agreed to take his last name if he agrred to let go fo having a son named after him. We wrote it out as an agreement at dinner one night (yep, there were drinks involved! ) I think I'm still going to use my last name for professional purposes though. He doesn't have to know!

I do NOT think you are being rediculous. I have been married for 7 months, and have not changed my name; nor do I want to.
I am embarrassed to admit this, but when people ask me if I am going to be changing my name, I tell them YES, even though I have no intention of changing it. I know its weak, but I feel pressured to tell them I'm changing it. Truth is, I was wishy washy about it from the start, but now I'm sure I want to keep my maiden name.
THis is a really difficult predicament you are in.....I don't have any advice for you....all I can tell you is that I know exactly how you feel b/c I am going through the same thing.

*Now that your married, it's not you leaving your family or joining your FHs - it's you and FH making your own family together and now you can start a new 'history' with him and maybe one day your children.
** i also had major reservations about changing my name, I had a beautful Italian last name and it took me 7 months to do it... I don't love DHs name or his family, but I do love him and I love being a mini-family with him now and hopefully a big family with him in the future.
