Latina Brides.. traditions?

Original post by Pookiesangel

Okay, I am interested to know of any traditions we have as latinas.
I am Cuban & Puerto Rican.

I found two Cuban traditions:

Cuban Brides should not wear pearls on their wedding day, pearls are thought to be the tears of an oyster, so every pearl you wear on your wedding day is a tear you shall shed during your marriage.

The other is Cigars are given out, much in the tradition a new dad gives them out. Cigars are a celebratory sign in Cuba

Any others?

I am trying to come up with ideas of things to do or have during the reception besides latin music that represent my heritage.

FH is Italian and Polish, we are doing Polka's and their is a Polish drink we are having..

I know that it is common Cuban practice to either give out fans at the church or cocktail hour or to have your BM carry a fan. I also know that mantilla viels are very popular. I just found a list of Latin tradiitions in May's Bride's magazine.
1. Panamanian and Mexican- a baby for every ripped ribbon at the bridal shower. Ribbons are then weaved through a basket and worn on the birde's head.
2. Mantilla veil
3. no pearls
4. Lots of candles
5. orange blossoms (from an orange tree) in your hair= fertility
6. fans
7. cigars
8. serve cuban mojitos, rich red wine, or tequilla and lime
9. the mexican snake dance
10. pinatas for kids

I hope this helps!!!

I'll probably have to do the 'Mi Nina Bonita' thing. It's funny because my family is the opposite of you Divabride -- I'd have to call the paramedics if I DIDN'T wear white!!

We have a couple of traditions... one is the lasso thing (don't know if I'm doing that), another is the Dama Solitaria (doing that); the 'Pajesitos' (not really doing that), and the bridal party dance which I'm not sure about yet.

Another, I guess, tradition is the way we do our showers: women only for the first 2 hours or so then the men are allowed in and it's just a great big party (no opening of presents).

Re: Latina Brides.. traditions?

I just found an article that cleared up a couple of the questions I had:

In hispanic cultures catholic wedding masses are held at 9AM

The church is decorated with white roses

Guests sit wherever they please (no bride or groom side)

The couple sits at a small table by themselves during the reception

The reception goes on all night (that's a given)

The bride's only attendants are her four godmother's. Each is responsible for one aspect of the ceremony. One makes three bouquets (1 for the bride, 1 to lay on the altar, and 1 to throw at the reception). The other godmother carries a dish with 13 coins along with the couple's rings. The other two godmothers are responsible for carrying the lasso with a cross that they drape in a figure 8 around the couple as the couple kneels at the altar, uniting them.

Hope this helps!!!
