So I disobeyed every rule of laundry I learned from my mom and threw in darks and lights together. And now everything that once was white is a medium to dark blue. Any ideas on how to make them white again, short of bleaching?

Hmmm...I had that happen once :( Its not fun!! Well if you can't bleach them...what i would do is run everything that turned blue though several rounds in the wash...just keep running it through (hot water) with a lot of detergent...do it say 3 times and see if helps. Depends also when you did this..if its still damp you have a better shot at restoring it back to white! Good luck :)...and listen to your mom!!! lol...

You can try Oxiclean...it does get the whites whiter a little bit...not sure what it will do to the light blues, though...

I think they sell something that will take the dye out of the places where it shouldn't be. Do a google search for laundry detergents and stain removers. You may find it.

I forget who makes it but there is a sheet you can add to your laundry that will absorb any dyes in the water.
In the meantime... do not dry the items that are 'stained' wash them again alone with a little bleach or oxiclean and it should do the trick.
