Ever been to a wedding and think you don't want THAT to happen at your own wedding? I'm going to start a thread...
I've been to weddings where:
-Bridesmaids' dates were seated with the 'random' table. It was so obvious that he didn't know anyone. He should have been seated with his date.
-The acoustics were poor during the ceremony so none of the guests could hear the vows.
-There was no clear gift area. We didn't know where to put their envelope so we placed it on the table where we got our table numbers.
-Big centerpieces that blocked the view from seeing the bride and groom as well as blocking the view from the people sitting in front of you.
-Getting a tacky favor at the end. Please don't hand out cheap tacky favors that no one appreciates. It's better not to hand a favor out at all.
-Awkward time in between ceremony and reception. The guests have to 'kill' these hours and often have nowhere to go. Yet it's not enough time to plan something in between.

Can I define tacky favors? :)
My friend's bride's idea of a favor was to take a polaroid of herself at the wedding for each guest. NOT with each guest and NOT with her husband. JUST her. She had each guest take a Polaroid of her blowing a kiss and signed them xx Ronnie
If any of you have that same idea - please refrain. It was the joke of the wedding. OH no... wait the other joke was the HUMONGOUS portrait that she had painted and posted over the cake - She was sitting in a big *** chair with the groom's face buried in her dress and her hand on his head... like she was blessing him. It was ridiculous. :)
Do you think I can return all of my Polaroid film & Sharpies to Target without a receipt...I can't find mine....
I thought it was a nice idea.....

Re: Learn from People's Mistakes
I feel that the whole favor thing even if its something that someone will u se and is really nice is going to cost you a bunch of money. My FH and I have decided to do a Donation to the ASPCA. WE decided on this organization but for others it could be something else. Were making scrolls and telling our guests that in lieu of a favore we donated to this speficic charity and thats it and bye bye to something thats going to sit in a drawer and collect dist or give someone another wine stopper that they prob. dont even have that much wine to even use them all. Just m opinion.

Re: Learn from People's Mistakes
Me and the FH were at a wedding last summer that the reception was over an hour's away worth of driving. Than we were supposed to leave our car in the hotel parking lot and a shuttle bus was to bus us to the RH 20mins away. Well needless to say the bus (which was a school bus) got filled pretty quickly and there was not enough room. We were told it would go to RH and come back to pick us up. Well...it never came back and we were trying to call fam and friends and no one answered b/c there was no reception (damn Fishkill area) anyway we ended up missing the cocktail hour. We did finally get in touch w/someone once they realized we were missing for so long. The stupid un airconditioned bus came back for us and took us to the RH in 100 degree weather. By the time we got there both me and the FH needed a shower. Getting back to the hotel after the reception was another story. Still not enough room on the bus soo..we made sure we got a ride with a non-drinking couple. Arghh aggravation. Anyway never doing that again!

i agree with these. but i think that the last one can be difficult to modify too much. mostly that's the case if the ceremony will be at a place other than the reception. it's good to try to make it as convenient as possible for all, but i don't think it's always so easy to do.
Thats the toughest one for most people - we had our reception and ceremony at the same place, so this didnt happen - but most people can't have that happen....

My photographer gave me some really good advice. Make sure you have breakfast, or lunch as the case may be, before you walk down the aisle or take pictures Hungry grumpy brides and bridal party member do not look good in pictures.
I went to a wedding, where the bridal party did not have anything to eat before the wedding except for the champagne in the limo. well, one of them had to leave early after she dirty her pretty dress in front of all the guests at the wedding.

Re: Learn from People's Mistakes
This one I understand, but have never seen an hour before start time..we are having a half hour because there are always those people who cannot be on time no matter what, so you give a little cushion for those people and a little nice surprise for those not always late...JMO. Also, this is not a bad thread, just people need to take it for what it is and be tactful, as in any other board. I can say I attended a wedding where the DJ was so bad, he played the same song twice or more AND had awkward pauses in between as he futzed with his Ipod, but again, this is not in control so much day of because you make careful decisions before hand. Also, the other thing with that wedding was that the bride was such a bridezilla, she had NO fun..so my suggestion would be what I am trying to hold to...you plan as much as you can and day of, you kinda let the string go and it's going to happen as it will..the important thing is marrying the one you love!!

I can;t imagine BMs not sitting with their dates!
This happened to me and my husband. I was in the bridal party and he got seated at a table all the way in the back of the room with complete strangers. I felt so utterly bad for him. i would have HATED that if i had to do that. How awkward. I kept running over to his table or he'd come and sit next to me while the person in the chair besides me was dancing. THIS IS THE WORST THING YOU CAN DO TO SOMEONE! bad bad bad.

Re: Learn from People's Mistakes
Here is the biggest mistake I've seen on this board (me included):
Losing sight of the REAL reason you're doing this!
LIW can be a bad thing in that you begin to compete with other brides and what they're doing, even unconciously.
You begin to think that matching the chairs to the linens to the cp's to the bouquets to the dress is a monumental decision to make.
You get completely freaked when there is rain forecast on your day - thirty days before your wedding!
You look at other women's dresses, centerpieces, cakes and wonder if you're doing enough or spending enough.
And the worst - putting yourself in a bad situation monetarily for a five hour occasion, for one day in your life.
Oh and bring yourself comfortable shoes or slippers to change into, just in case.

Why is everyone so G*d Dam* sensitive on this site???? If you do not want to hear other peoples honest opinions maybe you should either not be on a site like this or maybe even live in a bubble. Are people suppose to only say what they think you want to hear or be HONEST! Give me a break already, its getting so........annoying GIRLS!
I agree 100%...the old saying comes to mind 'if you don't like a thread, DON't read it'

I agree! But I love it on here! But I do tend to get a little obssessive over things that I never would have thought twice about if not for this website :)
