L.I. bride/NJ groom - where is fair to have reception?
Original post by LauraPete
My fiance and I live in Jersey now but all my family as well as the church I should get married in is in Oyster Bay (Nassau county). All of his friends live in Jersey and his parents, Pennsylvania. I have been looking in Nassau and Suffolk county so far but should I also be considering reception sites in Jersey? What is appropriate?

Wow, it's nice to see so many Jersey people! I'm moving to the Bergen County area this spring, we are going to start looking in a few months to rent an apartment.

Why can't you have your reception in Brooklyn. Queens or Staten Island so its fair to everyone!!

Try the Knot.com's new jersey threads...they should be very helpful. My fiance and his family are all from Jersey and I am from LI. I always wanted my wedding here so there wasn't much of a discussion...also my family and friends account for about 3/4 of the guests so i figured it would make more sense to have it in LI.
On another note, my fiance's friend is getting married within weeks of us and we have been planning together...his wedding is going to cost HALF of what ours is costing...i think you can have a beautiful wedding in NJ for alot cheaper and vendors there are cheaper as well.
I heard the NJ botanical gardens is beautiful and also the pleasantdale chateau (sp?) but i don't really know anything else about nj...sorry...hope this helps!!

Some reception sites that are nice and a close drive from NY / LI:
Pleasantadale Chateau - West Orange (my hometown) - Expensive but absolutely beautiful Mayfair Farms - West Orange - Moderate price The Manor - West Orange - Moderate price The Atrium - West Orange - Moderate price Richfield Regency - Verona - Moderate price The Chanticler - Millburn/Short Hills - Expensive Rockleigh Country Club - Bergen County - Exp. Knoll Country Club East or West - Moderate price Il Tulipano - Cedar Grove - Moderate price Valley Regency - Montclair - Expensive Westmount Country Club - West Paterson - Mod.
These are the places that I remember checking out. My favorites were Pleasantdale Chateau, The Chanticler and Valley Regency.
Let me know if you need more info.

Wow, I didn't realize how much info I would get from this post. Thanks so much for all the places I now need to check out! I agree about the money and that it may be a lot cheeper in NJ. P.S. - what are the consequences of me NEVER changing my lisence to NJ?????? any government mail will go to my father's house...oh well!

I would opt for the Nassau wedding. Your church is there and your family. As pointed out earlier from NJ it is not too bad to drive to Nassau. IF you go far out into Suffolk it can be a trek. I would definitely check out hotels for guests to stay at, also you may want to consider having an afternoon wedding.
My FH lives in Texas, I am in Florida, our wedding is in NY---we are both originally from NY and the majority of our friends and family are in the NE. The ones out of the country and on the west coast have to fly in anyway so FH decided on NY.
LOL.

Okay, since I have all the Jersey girl's attention - I am searching for the website for a place called Skyland (?) at NJ Botanical Gardens. My best friend went to a wedding there and loved it but I can't find it through google (well it gives me all sorts of things about the garden and flowers but not the reception site). Anyone know the website? It's not on theknot either.
D'oh! never mind. I just found it and it out of my price range.....

My hubby is from Jersey, and I was from LI. WE had our wedding at Crest Hollow in Woodbury. IT was a little farther east than we would have liked, but we loved the place.
BTW- we live in Mahwah now... where in Bergen are you moving?
I still have not changed my license to NJ, we have been married 3 mo., I have been living here for 6. My DH is up my a$$ about it, and his insurance has asked about it as well. According to the book, you are supposed to do it 60 days after moving here... oops! I am just too lazy to go take the test!
I am still in denial about living in NJ!

O.k. I have a dumb newbie question - I see people saying that they posted reviews of past weddings. Is there a separate page for that or do I just do a search in here using the name of the person or place?

There is a Vendor Ratings section under the wedding services tab up on the top of the page. Your best bet is to search for the hall or vendor that you're interested in, since I don't think everyone posts in the vendor rating section. Btw, did you get the FM I sent?

Kris- I'm in the Plaza room upstairs- which were you in? Where was your cocktail hour? I hate that you won't know until a few weeks before!
