Li girl in Harlem???

Original post by snowflake

Please help, girls ...

A great of mine from childhood lives in the city (Harlem, actually) and I live in western Suffolk. Work and the literal distance between us keeps us apart but I'd still like to get together every once in a while and hang out.

Problem is, IT'S HARLEM! I know that's not the 'PC' thing to say (or write) but I'm kinda scared to go visit her apartment at night. DH and I went last year for a party and it was a really bad neighborhood (tons of homeless, kids fighting in the streets, bars on windows, etc).

I don't want to create a problem with our friendship but also don't want to be fearful when (or if) I visit. Btw, I've been in my house for over a year and she hasn't come to visit me yet.

Edited for spelling

maybe you shouldnt go. you dont sound street smart (or plain old SMART for that matter, but moving on), you oculd never handle yourself in the city.

whoa, a LI girl in Harlem! what craziness right?!

maybe you should cancel on your friend. tell her your afraid of people of other ethinicities than your cracker-self. tell her Harlem is no place for a Long Island girl. tell her youre too good to visit her.

maybe you should opt for going to the mall instead. take your SUV ,drive it on down to walt whitman mall. get something nice. then maybe stop for fake tan, some blonde highlights and a mani/pedi.

you know what- I'm really disgusted by the borderline, preceived, implied, or straight-out racism that exists on these boards. Im not hurt by the statements of 'snowflake'. I actually feel sorry for her. Her apparent ignorance is her problem. I hope your kids don't come out this way. I'm too grown to educate someone who is so outright thick-headed. And Regi- I know you were just joking with those images but ubfortunately sometimes those are the same images that feed the already existing ignorance of people. Think of how clueless this poster was. She probably used your image as a point for her argument. Im saddened and comforted at the same time. Saddened because some people will never get it and these attitudes continue to create unnecessary obstacles for some of us and I'm comforted because I'm always on guard - and I know it's for a reason.

What is everyone wrong about?

I went to City College for two years, so I know the area, and I'd hardly call it unsafe.

have also worked in the South Bronx for ten years. I think that both areas are alike in that the majority of people are decent and hard-working, and the small percentage of thugs give these areas a bad name.

If you walk around like you're afraid, people will mess with you. Ironically, I have found it more likely that a stranger would say 'good morning' or 'hello' in the S. Bronx than when I lived in Whitestone. And when I lived there, a 'nice' part of Queens, I had bars on my windows.

Well, I am a 5'2,110 lb. extremely white woman who lived in Harlem on 153rd and St. Nicholas Place for quite a while and managed to survive. It is true that men would sometimes make comments, but come on that happens no matter where you are , be it Harlem or Arkansas. Yes, there are homeless people, but instead of turning a blind eye or finding it scary you could help out or at least appreciate your good fortune. It sounds as if you are afraid of the stereotype of Harlem and not giving it a chance.
