I know it's kinda personal but for you homeownesr out there on LI, what is your average electric bill? Ours seemed high, like $130 for last month and we don't have AC!! But maybe it's just more living in a house than an apt?

Re: LIPA bill
Mine averages from 100-200 dependng on time of year. So $130. Is pretty average. You can always do LIPA budget where you pay the same amount every month.

Re: LIPA bill
What's the LIPA budget? I'm clueless, we've only lived in Nassau for about 2 months.

Funny you should mention this, ours was around 56.00 than all of a sudden went up to 76.00 and now got a letter in the mail the other day saying it was going up to 110.00.

Re: LIPA bill
Our budget is $150 per month & our Keyspan gas budget is $153. Our house is small (it's an attached townhouse) but not energy efficient-vaulted ceilings, builders windows & central air so I think our budget is pretty good. I joined the LIPA Edge program & I've gotten some decent rebates so far & it looks like our usage will be less than our budget this year. Things you can do to lower your electric bill-
install a programable thermostat if you have central air(LIPA will install one for free if you join Edge)
keep it set at 78 degrees(its really not hot at that tempature if it stays consistant)
keep your blinds or curtains closed in the afternoon
install an attic fan or whole house fan
switch over to flouresent bulbs(I did this in some areas, but over rooms the light looked too weird)
make sure your heating/air system filters are changed bi-monthly
buy energy star appliances when you can
These are all things we've tried over the last six months & our usage is going down.

Re: LIPA bill
We see some variations between around $60 and $120, depending on whether or not it's an estimated or actual reading. We also notice more of a spike in the summer. We don't have CA but we do have ceiling fans and a window fan in the upstairs bedroom that run a lot in the summer. We also have a dehumidifier in the basement which is running a lot more in the summer too.

Re: LIPA bill
We were at about $80.00 per month with the CA it was about 130.00 per month. We are both carefull about leving lights on and use most of our appliances at night. (I dont know if that makes a difference)

Re: LIPA bill
Well we moved in in March and our bills have been between $60-$80. Well this month we got a bill for a whopping $274!!!!!!!! I fell on the floor.
It must be the AC, we didn't really use it but our tenant had it on constantly. Speaking of which, we are considering charging him something more a month next year for the summer months. What would be smart? I know people do this. We suffered through the heat this summer to conserve and still get a $300 bill!

Re: LIPA bill
Our bill for a 2 month period (the last two months), was OVER $600!!! We almost had a stroke!!!!
It's because our brand new central air was malfunctioning for about those 2 months (it would never shut off). The guy who installed it took forever to get his a$$ back here and fix it......he kept saying nothing was wrong with it. Well, now it's fixed, so no more super high LIPA!

Re: LIPA bill
We signed up for the balanced billing and our LIPA bill kept bobbing around between $70-$195. We called them to see what was happening and they told us that with the balanced billing it uses the previous year (with the last owner, the old lady living alone), her bill was $60, so ours was trying to use that as a guide (but we are two married people with a few computers so our usage is different). They said that for next year our average, and monthy bill through the balanced bill program, should be $115. I don't think that is too bad, espeically b/c we have electric heat and central a/c.

Re: LIPA bill
Denise My boss has a some apts that he rents. He charges the tenants $50 per month, per air conditioner from June through September. Personally I don't think this really covers it but it helps. He's been charging that for the last 5 years and hasn't raised it.
