Original post by leafgirl

where is everyone going to live after they get married? apt, condo, house, other??? I haven't the slightest idea what to do. I'd hate to use all of our savings right away... ouchies and renting seems to be maybe a waste... what are you doing?

Re: living after wedding??

We just bought a house in September and we are super excited and a bit stressed out! We kinda did things backwards. I am in the real estate business and we found the perfect house for us in the area we wanted w/land so we jumped on it. Now we want to fix it up but we are also paying for the wedding ourselves!!! So we are trying to keep all things in perspective.

Well don't stress too much. Just know in the end it's all worth it and it will all be beautiful.

If we stay in NY we might have to rent for a year and then buy but there is also a chance we might move to Colombus, OH (FH's company Hdqtrs is there) right after the wedding. We could by a mini-mansion out there for the price of a shack here!

Re: living after wedding??

We live together already, however in an apartment in the home his parents own. We live downstairs from them. After the wedding we're putting an extension on the house, because we just can't afford a new home as of now. And if we were to buy, we'd be in severe debt living paycheck to paycheck, and we don't want that!

Re: living after wedding??

How much do you think you need to save for a down payment?

see im under the impression the more you put down the better i was thinking of putting down anywhere between 60k- 100k

Re: living after wedding??

it all depends on how much of a mortgage you can pay...FH and I are putting 10% down - but we found a loan that we didnt have to pay PMI or take out a second mortgage. We both have good jobs, so our mortgage payment (while still very high) is do-able.

We both lived at home until now (i'll stay until after the wedding) so we were able to save a lot of money this past year.

We have had NO help from our parents (we both paid for our own college) - so if we can buy a house on LI, anyone can.

We currently own our house right now......but it's small....basically a starter home. We're planning on building a new one after the wedding to start our new married life together!

FH and I bought a house in June and did tons of renovations, it's tough having a mortgage and paying for a wedding but we just know it's all worth it.

FH & I already live together. We are currently trying to sell our apartment so we can use the money for a down payment for a house.

Re: living after wedding??

my parents are making an apt upstairs for us to live in for a few years - the original plan was to save up for a house after a year or two

however, over these past few weeks my parents have done a complete turn around - they went from kicking us out after a year to. . .offering to make our house a two family ( we would pay for all the work ), having us live upstairs and signing over the house to us. . . they want us to ask my brother and sister first though so we shall see ( they havent expressed ANY interest in the house yet so i dont think it will be a problem)

we will only consider doing this if we feel comfortable after the first year or two living in the apt - otherwise we will jsut struggle and buy our own home!

Re: living after wedding??

we want to buy a house, ideally but its just soooo expensive - we both only started our carrers last year so although we have saved it is no where near enough for a house. We may possibly buy a house with my grandma - she needs to move out of the house she is in now so hopefully that will work out

Re: living after wedding??

We live together currently and are renting in Queens but we are really really confused about where to live. FH's parents are in New Paltz (love it there), and the rest of his siblings are in Westchester. My whole family is in Queens and I am from there, but I don't love it so much. I am really really tired of everything being so expensive and so much traffic every where I go and having to circle around and look for parking to do anything.

Ideally I would love to move to NC or Florida but it would be us just picking up and moving away from both of our entire families. Even with just a dog I appreciate having family so close by, I can't imagine trying to have kids and them not being a short drive from my mom. I guess you can say we are completely in limbo, but we are DYING to buy a house. We have no idea where.

We're living in a decent sized apartment right now and hope to have a house shortly after we're married, especially if we have a HM baby.
