Re: Living Situation
We are planning on looking for a house a few months before we tie the knot - just to get a feel of what is out there, and once the wedding comes and we are back from the HM hopefully we will have enough of a down payment to get into something that we love - renting is so much $$

Re: Living Situation
We're probably going to find an apt to rent for a year or so and then look for a house. Or we might buy a coop first if we find a really good deal.

Re: Living Situation
We currently rent an apartment. We started looking for a house now, but not seriously, we'll start doing that after we get married.

Girls who rent...do you feel like you are throwing money away each month? We both live with our parents, but FI thinks it's a waste of money to rent and I'm up in the air about it. He said for the amount of money you pay in rent $1000-2000, we can purchase a condo/coop for that amount.

That's true, but since we'll be spending a lottttttttttt on the wedding we're not going to have as much for a down payment on something.

My FH and I are in contract to buy a house...we close next month!!! To us...it was important to buy the house before the wedding, even though money will be extremely tight for a few months.

Re: Living Situation
my situation is a little different, i have one year left to law school and we currently share a great apt, so we renewed our lease for one more year.
we're deciding whether to move to nyc or stay in the city where we currently live -- if we go to NYC, we'll rent an apt, if we stay we can buy a house pretty easily and will start house-hunting after we decide.
as for living with parents, i am SOOOOO happy to have my own apartment and freedom. it is worth A LOT! i am living with my parents for 7 weeks this summer (hard to find a 7 week sublease in NYC and all of my stuff is 1000 miles away) and I can't wait to go back to my own apartment by school. however, LI has so few options w/ respect to apartments that almost all of my friends still live with their parents. i'm creeped out by the idea of renting a room in someone else's house.
in other cities there are tons of great, reasonably priced apartments, and then it's easy to get your own place so few people live at home.

If you are putting alot of money down you can get a mortgage amount for that - we pay close to $1700/month for our rent - and any houses we have seen to get a mortgage payment with just closing costs down to be at like 2400/month we would need to find a house for like $240k - still havent found that house yet

We bought a co-op last year and love it! I would def recommend taking advantage of the low prices right now if possible! It's definitely a great time to buy.

We dont have the $$ to put down so thats where we are stuck... otherwise we'd buy a condo which we're envitably going to do... but we decided to rent for a year... it ***** but we have no other options

Re: Living Situation-Edited for another question
If you have the money saved I would highly recomend just buying something. The housing market is low right now and it's going to continue to drop over the next year. I rent in NYC and it's such a waste but we can't afford to buy here so it's our only option.

Re: Living Situation-Edited for another question
We are looking to buy a house. We need to be home owners before February. I hope we find the right house. My FH does not want to rent because he feels why pay 1200-1900 on rent when you can put it towards a morgage.
