FH wants to buy a house from now SO bad. He is looking for a POS so they can knock it down and re-do the entire thing. Him and his father own a huge building/construction company so that works to our advantage.... Now, I am all for that but I am kinda nervous!
a) we never lived together so I kind of want to start off in an apt to adjust to married life, bills, cooking, etc.
b) umm hello - mortgage? I know we can afford it but thats really fkn scary to think about.
c) I do get that he doesn't want to pay rent if we can just be putting our $ towards a house of our own but there is less to worry about $$ wise with an apt..
what are your plans? are you guys renting? buying?

do what you can afford. if you can buy, have a down payment, and you can afford the mortgage payments then do it!

BUY!!!! Buy something that you can afford!!! We thought we would never be able to handel bills and everything but it is sooooo worth it! Especially that houses are so low and you can get a great deal!!!! And you said your FH and his dad can do most of the work!!! You can buy a house cheap and fix it up. That is what we are doing cause my mom works for a building company and have a million contacts that would work for us for cost. I know it seems like a lot but please consider buying. once you are ready to buy a house you never know what the market will be like!!!! You might be able to afford it then......

Re: living situation - rent/buy?
We bought a house last November and it needed to be completely redone. FH and his friends completely gutted it and redid the whole thing to make it look awesome and liveable for me, before it was horrible. And it took about 3 months for them to get all the work done.
If you can afford to do buy, definitely buy now

lollllll i knowwww its ridiculous fh went to a private school and its gone up 5k since he graduated lol ridiculous! also the markets low now so if you can it is a really good time to buy
I'm with you on that, we've recently looked at private schools including ones I have gone to and tuition has more than doubled it's crazy! We have a house in Amity Harbor which is Copiague SD not Amityville but it still isn't great so we're looking into our options for private and Catholic schools if we stay in this house which I like because it exaggerates the cost of having kids right now.

Re: living situation - rent/buy?
We decided to rent just because with the wedding its near impossible for us to come up with a down payment right now. If you are in a position where you can buy a home...do it! The market is great for buyers and it sounds like your fiance has the resources to be able to fix/redo anything that may need it, which is normally a big challenge for most.

Re: living situation - rent/buy?
I would definitely buy! I feel I 'wasted' a lot of money renting my own apartment before I moved in with FH. He owned his own place before I met him otherwise we'd be looking to buy. We'll definitely be buying something again in the near future.

i went to private school in Brooklyn my whole life (pre-k - 12th grade) so did my brother & sister. FH only went to private high school & he got so much better of an education then i did. i will never send my kids to private school, such a waste of money.
where did you go to grade school? i went to private school too. i think i want to send my kids to a parachioal (church) school...but it will depend where we live, how the schools are, and how are kids are. FH had a public school education his whole life and turned out fine. so who knows.
i went to St. Bernadette for grammar school in Dyker Heights & i went to Bishop Kearney for High School in Bensonhurst. the current grammar school tuition is $3,600 a year if you have one child in the school, plus $500 in fees, not including other expenses they hit you with during the year. & you are also required to give a minimum of $400 to the Church every year.
for my high school the tuition is currently $7,860 a year, not including any fees or the uniform expense.
imagine all these numbers times 3. IMO that's a lot of money to be spending. not to mention that in order to teach in public school a teacher has to have a masters degree, but not in private school.

Re: living situation - rent/buy?
BUY! I've lived on my own since I was 17. Rented place after place. FH and I finally bought a co-op and it is the first time we're living together. BUT, it is SO worth it! No more wasting money on rent.
Also, I went to public school in Brooklyn. I would not send me kids to a grade school pre-k - 5 or Junior High in Brooklyn's public system. AND I know a lot of teachers who teach in this system who would agree. However, I had a GREAT experience with Kingsborough HS which is a public High School on a community college campus.

Re: living situation - rent/buy?
I'm gonna echo everyone else...if you have the $$ then BUUUUY!!!
Right now FH and I are renting...FH is dyyyyying to buy a house, he's brought it up more than once but when I tell you we have no money for a down payment I mean like absolutely not one dollar. There's nobody that's gonna take no money down right now...and if they do, our rates will be sky high.
We'll probably buy a year or year and a half after the wedding...hopefully!!

Re: living situation - rent/buy?
if you can buy than go for it.
but keep in mind the down payment is a big number!! the 5%-10% days are over. plus all the other crap that you need to pay for. inspection, lawyer. etc plus if you plan on livining on long island depending on the town the freakin tax gets addded in which most calculators dont give you that option to do. then again, i could be wrong.
