living situation - rent/buy?

living situation - rent/buy?

about houses/apartments?

FH wants to buy a house from now SO bad. He is looking for a POS so they can knock it down and re-do the entire thing. Him and his father own a huge building/construction company so that works to our advantage.... Now, I am all for that but I am kinda nervous!

a) we never lived together so I kind of want to start off in an apt to adjust to married life, bills, cooking, etc.

b) umm hello - mortgage? I know we can afford it but thats really fkn scary to think about.

c) I do get that he doesn't want to pay rent if we can just be putting our $ towards a house of our own but there is less to worry about $$ wise with an apt..

what are your plans? are you guys renting? buying?

we go back and forth on this daily. lol. check out a rent vs buy calculator. if we can find something (probably a co-op) in a decent price range that we can break even under 3 years, i think we will buy. otherwise, rent. oyyy

if you have a chance to buy... DO IT... renting is a waste of money

If you can afford it, I say buy.. I think its too late to test the waters on living together, your already getting married

His parents own a house in Ozone Park but don't live there. He's living in the apartment we're going to share once we're married...two bedrooms, nice EIK, walk-in closet in the master bedroom, two bathrooms, nice-sized living room. We're staying there for awhile to put aside $$$ for a house. (Renting, but at a lower cost than if it wasn't family)

We bought a condo last year in FL but I still live in NY and he is there by hinself until after the wedding. We plan on living there for about 2 or 3 years and then if the economy gets better we will buy a house down there.

Ugh I understand completely- We are renting now and I hate it becuase I feel like it such a waste of money- but it works out good for us because of the same idea- we wanted to get used to each other- and we were tight on money so we didnt even have an option to buy- if I could buy I SOOO would.

If you can afford to buy, then buy!!!!

When you're renting, it's really annoying that your money is going to someone else, and you have to basically live by your landlord's rules......unless you get a place with an off-site landlord, lol.

If it's yours, IT's YOURS and you live by your own rules!

ETA: We rented before buying, but it was way before we got engaged. We wanted to make sure we could tolerate each other before we bought. But like NYGirl said, it's kind of too late for that now, since you're planning on getting married next year!!!!

If you can afford it I would def do it.
We are going to go straight into buying a house. I have been saving for the down payment for years and we are afraid of a mortgage but okay with it. I don't want to waste money on rent each month. We feel like we will never be able to save money for a house if we are paying rent each month.

my fh is just like your fh lol, he owns a contracting company and is looking for a house thats crap with a big lot to bulldoze the crap out of it lololl

hes seriously against renting if you can afford buying something, and i agree with him, why pay somelese mortgage at the end of the day if you can afford your own?

Re: living situation - rent/buy?

we have been renting for a few years and will continue to do so for the next year or 2 until we can save up for a downpayment on a house.

if we could get a house now i would in a second. it would be awesome to have more space and not be wasting money on rent.

I found it to be weird, I hated to cook and clean when i lived home... and all of the sudden i love to cook and became a neat clean freak when i moved out. My mom tells me its because it's MINE now. It is my Apt., I am the one serving the food, I am the one doing FH's Laundry. So do i really want people coming to my apt going ewwwww she is dirty, ooor that meal was crappy? or FH wears dirty wrinkled clothes, lol. You will be ok, PROMISE!!! It comes natural to most woman (there are a few exceptions though)

Fh & I lived together in an apartment for about 18 months and then bought a home about 6 months ago.

There are pros and cons to both renting and buying. But if you have the money and can afford to buy, why not? Owning a home is wonderful and I love it everyday.

Re: living situation - rent/buy?

Right now, FI and I live together in an apartment. It's just us on the top floor and our landlady on the bottom apartment. I have to say we lucked out with the landlady siuation because she treats us just like family and she has actually giving FI a lot of work to do in her apartment (we didn't have to pay rent 3 months in a row because she figured the work he did would even out to the rent - it actually wound up costing less than rent but she doesn't have to know that lol).

Our plan right after the wedding though is to really crack down and save for a house. We are saving a little now as we go along but a big bulk of our income is going towards the wedding (we are paying for it ourselves).

I agree with everyone else though that if you can afford it now, go for it!

Re: living situation - rent/buy?

i would love to move out of the apartment downstairs from my parents but i know its not the responsible thing to do. we have to wait until FH graduates in December & finds a job.

we are settling on waiting until after the wedding. its not the best living situation but we are just happy to be together.

we are planning on renting an apartment for a while. we really need to see where FH gets a job. unfortunately that may mean us moving out of Brooklyn. but we shall see.

Re: living situation - rent/buy?

FH and I are exactly opposite you.
I want a house (or a town-house) he wants a co-op/condo...

I just can't wait to host our first christmas (or any holiday for that matter) at our 'house' and his family has 14 on his side (yea, 3 brothers, their spouses, the kids and his parents oh and us) my family there's 5 (not including us)... so I don't see how we'd fit 20 people in a co-op on a holiday!

but we'll prob go with his wish
