FH wants to buy a house from now SO bad. He is looking for a POS so they can knock it down and re-do the entire thing. Him and his father own a huge building/construction company so that works to our advantage.... Now, I am all for that but I am kinda nervous!
a) we never lived together so I kind of want to start off in an apt to adjust to married life, bills, cooking, etc.
b) umm hello - mortgage? I know we can afford it but thats really fkn scary to think about.
c) I do get that he doesn't want to pay rent if we can just be putting our $ towards a house of our own but there is less to worry about $$ wise with an apt..
what are your plans? are you guys renting? buying?

ugh joanna these boys. I understand his point but I guess I just feel like it is all at once? I can hardly pick INVITATIONS imagine trying to choose decorating a HOUSE?!?!!?
He won't really even go into the houses, he just looks at the yard. Hey, atleast I got him to agree to move to LI!
lolollll oh lord your gonna start emailing paint swatches hahahahah i know it really IS A LOT and it is kind of scary being responsible for a wholehouse but it will be the first thing me and fh have thats OURS
yeah getting him to come to LI is huuuuuuge, fh wouldnt even let me finish the sentence when i brought that up lol
I think the big selling point was that if we moved to BK, my kids would HAVE to attend private school (which is about 9k a semester PER KID).....sooooooo atleast on LI, you get the advantage of using the public schools if you want and yea, the taxes might be a bit higher, but its better than paying an arm and a leg for a house, 5k in taxes and 10k a year for tuition!! NO WAY would we be able to do all that.....he also wants a big back yard since he thinks we are having 45 kids

i went to private school in Brooklyn my whole life (pre-k - 12th grade) so did my brother & sister. FH only went to private high school & he got so much better of an education then i did. i will never send my kids to private school, such a waste of money.

Re: living situation - rent/buy?
we were renting for about a year.. but w/the purpose of saving $$$...my dad was our landlord and our rent was $500 for a beautiful 1 bedroom. it helped us get used to each other and learn how to share....
we bought a condo this past june...i would've preferred a house (for the space) but we have busy jobs and we are not ready for the responsibility of a house...(maintenance) its a brand new 1.5 bedroom (2nd bedroom has no windows) condo...we will probably stay there until baby # 2 comes along....
like the other girls said..its kinda too late to 'test' out in an apt lol... if you can afford to buy..then buy!

where did you go to grade school? i went to private school too. i think i want to send my kids to a parachioal (church) school...but it will depend where we live, how the schools are, and how are kids are. FH had a public school education his whole life and turned out fine. so who knows.

We're definitely buying as soon as we can, but it's a little different for us since we've been renting for 3 years now. It just makes more sense to us in the long run to buy.

Buy, by all means buy. We own 3 houses and we are not married yet. FH owned before I met him. I owned a condo before I met FH. We pulled some equity out of each of our places, put it together & now own a place together. We rented the other two places. When I first purchased my condo I was broke for a while......now, I'm so glad I made the sacrifice when I did. My condo will be paid in full in 5 years. Than I sell it, ( to get rid of the maintaince fees) buy a house for cash & rent that. Buy don't rent you can't go wrong with real estate. If your FH has a construction company, that is all the more reason to buy. GO FOR IT!

I went to SES (Soterios Ellinas School) I think it was in Bayridge? when I was in BK.....loved the private school experience but it was really expensive, esp since there was 2 of us!

Do it now while you are young.....before you know it 15 years will pass & you'll still be renting I purchased my condo when I was in my early 20's....it was a sacrifice, I didn't go out much.....now I'm in my mid 30's & glad I did what I did!

Re: living situation - rent/buy?
Fh is pushing to buy something but I am going to try to push living in a house my parents own and have rented out. They have offered to give us the first floor apartment which is the nicest one. I figure we can live there for a year or two and then buy something we really love rather than settling now for something.

It really is a scary thought. Totally went through all of your emotions as well..now..I am closing with him on a house next friday..still have a bit of a racing heart about it but it's excitement. There are a lot of options for first timers...look into government/county first time home buyer assistance...take your time..this will be the biggest decision you will make (different than children I think bc you sign your life away at the closing). good luck and come over for some wine!

we can't afford a house yet, we hopefully we get one 2-3 years after the wedding... if you can afford it your fh is right...dont throw money away on an apartment.
apartments get small quick!! trust me on that one

hes seriously against renting if you can afford buying something, and i agree with him, why pay somelese mortgage at the end of the day if you can afford your own?
ITA!! I hated renting and giving my money to someone else

Re: living situation - rent/buy?
we just bought a co-op in RVC on long island. We had the down payment and can afford the mortgage. I didn't see the point in renting if we could do this.

Re: living situation - rent/buy?
We currently live in a condo and will sell it after we get married and look for a house. I would say buy if you have the money. It's definitely a buyer's market right now.

Re: living situation - rent/buy?
DEFINITELY buy if you can afford it!!! Forget size, doing things you're used to having done for you, etc. You will get used to it so quickly. And you still have to adjust to being on your own whether it's an apt or a house!
We would LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE to buy but somehow we don't have any money. It is one of my life's daily puzzles. Actually I think about it almost all the time. We currently live in the second floor apartment of FMIL's house and pay minimal (sort of minimal) per month. Eff that. We pay $800 a month, which isn't worth it when we could live in someone else's house or a building for only a few hundred more per month. but i digress.
