Just curious, after you get married will you be living in an apartment, co-op, condo, or a house? How many of you are buying homes vs. renting?

Re: living situations
We are definitely going to buy right away. I am firmly against renting...I am a realtor and it kills everytime I see people renting as opposed to buying. For a bit more money monthly you can invest in a piece of real estate and actually get some equity. I already own 2 houses out in Suffolk but don't live there. I want to stay in Nassau for work reasons.
PS girls - it's also better to invest in a house as opposed to a co-op. Alot of co-op boards require a minimum of 10% down which is usually about $15k-$20k and a house gains much more equity over time than a co-op does.

Re: living situations
My FH owns a home and has for several years now. We are actually doing a deed transfer as we speak putting both of our names on title so that the home is 'ours' and not just 'his'.

Re: living situations
We'll continue to live where we do now (mooching off an apt. in his grandfather's house) until we save up some more money. So hopefully a year from now we'll be looking to buy a house or condo or something. We need the wedding money as a jump start

Re: living situations
We've been renting for years so we never had the opportunity to 'stay at home' and save money...so...it looks like renting for a few more years!

Re: living situations
DH bought our home before he proposed. He knew he was going to pop the question so he planned it that way, that we would already have the house. Smart man... I don't think we could have afforded to buy this house now with the way prices are... correction - I know we wouldn't have been able to afford this house.

Unless we decide to rob a bank, I doubt we'll ever own a home here.

Re: living situations
I am so against renting... When we moved in together... I was adamant that we bought either a condo or co-op. So we bought a co-op.. Obviously we want to move to a house after we get married... but we will see, prices are insane....

Re: living situations
we will probably live in an apt near whatever UNC grad school i get into and later purchase a home when i get a job after school. i can't see buying a house before knowing what school district i will work in (i am going for school counseling). we are gonna relocate to NC bc we would never be able to afford the life we want on LI. right now we rent and i do not see a problem with renting before you are ready and able to buy a home. ~lacey

Re: living situations
after the wedding (today! ) and the dust settles, FH and I will be looking for a new place. I am hoping that we can afford to buy at least a townhouse.

Re: living situations
We're renting a townhouse right now. but once the wedding is over we will begin to start looking seriously. We are debating if we will stay here or move down to the Philly area.

Re: living situations
I am impressed that so many of you are buying homes while planning a wedding. There was no way we could have paid for both. We lived in an apartment in my grandfather's house for 5 months after we got married (rent free) sooooooo nice! Then we bought our condo. Now 2 years later we are starting to look for a house. Good luck to all!
