Long Engagement Brides?

Original post by marymoon

I just got engaged Jan 10, 04, and we're looking forward to a Dec 2006 wedding. Are there any other long engagement brides out there? Why did you decided to do it? Was it a good idea? How are you handling the wait?

Re: Long Engagement Brides?

My engagement was 2 years. It was the best thing we ever did. Because it gave us time to save and work on our careers. We don't want to struggle financially once were married.
We're paying the wedding ourselves, so money is an issue for us.
So that's what we did!! Years fly by so fast anyways.... our wedding year is already here.

The only thing you might have to worry about is that sometimes what you want now, could change by the time you get married. And if you book and pay things to early...you might have second thoughts later and it may cause some conflicts.

But other than that..I think waiting it great!!
Use the time to spend with your girlfriends and go out....enjoy life!!!

We got engaged in July of 2002, and we are getting married in May 2004- a 22 month long engagement. We decided to do this so that we would have time to save money, plus get the vendors that we wanted. I thought the time would drag by, but it has been the exact opposite. It has FLOWN!

we are having a 2 year and 6 day engagement. I love it!! it gave us more time to save and plan, plus we already live together so its like were married anyway! And its giving me time to loose all my extra pregnancy weight!
I agree time DOES fly.. I dont feel like i've been engaged this long!! you have your whole life to be married! what the big deal if you have a 2 year engagment? No rush

we were 1 1/2 years...and I loved it...I was able to plan AND Rethink (sometimes rethink too much) but I did see my tastes change during that time...

there were times when i wished it would hurry up...but that wasn't very often...it was an exciting time...and the anticipation is really a lot of fun...

quite a few of the people that planne din under a year IMO didn't enjoy it as much...

We are exactly 2 years we got engaged in May of 03 and getting married May 05 it we have almost everything done. It goes by soo fast. The only problem with it was that it gave us to much time to think things through Id rather plan in 6 months so there wouldnt be too much thinking.

I got the Rock on Dec 24th 2002 and will be getting married on Dec 3rd 2004
If it were up to me, I would have been married in Dec of 2003, but it just was to much for my family and all. My sister and brother both got married in the year of 2003. My poor Mom, so we pushed it back to 2004. Well I always wanted a Christmas theme wedding (my fav. time of year), so it made us have a 2 yr engagement. Over all, it feels like forever, but it goes quick. I like having the time to plan things and shop around. Besides, the longer your engaged, the more posts you can add to 'brides helping brides' It has to be a personal decision though between you and FH. Best of luck and Happy Engagement

We were on 9/26/03 and we'll be married on 9/16/05. So, it's really 2 years. We needed a long engagement to save money for the wedding. We're paying for it ourselves.

We got engaged Sept 03 and will be married Aug 05 so that's 23 months. The reason we chose this date is because we need time to save $$ and I wanted to finish grad school before getting married.

We got engaged on 4/26/02 and we are getting married on 6/27/04. We decided to wait b/c I am a full time student and wanted to get some more of my graduate program completed before marriage so that I am closer to working and earning a salery. I think the timing has been perfect for us. Between being a student, and planning a LI wedding from Staten Island, it has taken a great deal of scheduling to plan the wedding, and I definitely needed all of this time. I thought it was going to take forever for 2004 to come, but ever since we hit the 1 year mark, time has been flying!

We are kind of forced into having a long engagment because of his military standing, but it gives us time to save so its not so bad

Our engagement is one week short of two years and it's great! I was not as thrilled as my fiance about it originally, but he had the right idea. I am not nearly as stressed out as I would be if I had to do this in less time. Plus, we both live with our parents and are in the process of buying a house. I can't imagine having to do all of that in less than two years. It has FLOWN by!!!!

Re: Long Engagement Brides?

We've been engaged since 2001, and for the most part I've loved having such a long engagement. I mean, sure, if money grew on trees, I'd love to be married, but oh well.
My only real advice is to not start picking things like dresses, tiaras, bridesmaid dresses, favors, flowers, and invitations yet. Book your hall, and band, and photographer right now, but IMO, everything else can wait. If you come across an amazing deal, I guess you can pick something up, but trust me, your taste will change. I can not begin to tell you how many times I've changed my mind on certain things, and I'm so glad I didn't start ordering things too early. When you first get engaged, and first come on to a wedding site like this you get so overwhelmed with ideas, and everything seems so awesome, but believe me, you'll see something more awesome next month, and something even more awesome than that the next....you'll see.
It's a really weird feeling with the wedding coming up now. It's almost like it's not real. We've been talking about it for so long, that it's really surreal that it's coming up so quickly now.

Re: Long Engagement Brides?

I have been engaged for 3 years this Valentines Day! We are doing it backwards. We decided to have a baby first. If we had the money we would have been married a long------- time ago. We have been together 10 years. Also we lived in Fla. a long time and knew most of our family wouldn't make it. We both planned on having kids before we were 30 and the money still wasn't there so we had our beautiful son! Now we are doing well and are having our wedding 8/28/04 and our son who is three is going to be the 'ring bear' as he calls it. He is just as excited as us!
