It took 2 years to get the banister done and we still have a bit more to do but.....

before pics- note the creepy little girl by the bottom of the stairs. The people who owned our house before us were a bit strange.... oh yes, that is a 'time out' doll.

Can you share how the process was done .. I mean .. is that actually brand new stairs .. or was the structure refurbished???

Also .. if you don't mind sharing .. about how much does work like that cost???

BTW - I'm with you on that creepy doll. I saw it in a catalog and was so freaked out by it that I showed it to people and some were like 'that's really cute'.

Well, the first thing we did was to tear out the banister and to get the ugly green carpet off the stairs and the laminate in the middle that acted like a runner. The builders or previous owners had glued the carpet down and the carpet had a rubber backing that stuck all over the hard wood and was a real b!tch to remove.

We then hired a really cheap company to sand down the stairs. They did our whole upstairs and the stairs for $800- that's 4 bedrooms and the hall too!

After they finished the floors, we lived without a banister for 2 years- too busy with other stuff and not really knowing what to do with the stairs.

We had priced some banister places and b/c our stairs are such an interesting shape, no one would touch it for under $7,000 !

That was even for the home depot stock that we could buy ourselves. Well, we kept searching and we found the person through our neighbor. He did a fantastic job on their stairs (not the same stair type as us- they had regular stairs) and was pretty reasonable priced. It turns out that the stair guy we hired is a parent in our elementary school building. Ari and I don't have his kids but it's such a small world.

Bottom line- he did the job for us for only $2,500!!!!!!!!!

He was incredible. I would highly recommend him!

PS- it turns out that the banister and rails that my DH and I picked out was the least expensive that he offered. We didn't know this until he gave us the price. We wanted to do something very delicate since we didn't want to take away from the uniqueness of the stairs.

I am so glad I saw this post! I have 'Brady Bunch' stairs -- 'floating stairs, no risers, a wood and iron railing. I am desperately looking for someone to renovate my staircase! Please FM information on your great handyman, if you don't mind. He has done amazing work!!
