is it normal to have to pay like $500 for a priest to marry us?

At a church? We paid $750, but that included the organist, and the singer and the priest.

yes, that's probably average for a private officiant.
although, just so you know, if you're having a priest come to your reception hall, he's probably no longer a priest in communion with the Catholic Church (if you are Catholic) and it will NOT be recognized as a valid sacrament in the Catholic Church. you must be married IN a church for htat to be the case. OR if you are an inter-faith marriage and have been approved by the church to be married outside (this SOMETIMES happens with inter-faith marriages), the priest should be a priest from your church that has been given the dispensation to perform a Catholic wedding outside a church.

Re: LOOKING FOR A PRIEST TO MARRY US
For us to get married in the church we are paying $450. We were told it would be the same amount if we used a priest from that parish to get married someplace else too.
ETA: To get married in the church, the price also includes the organist and choir. We don't get the extras offsite.

Our donation to the church is $400, and then $150 each to the song leader and organist. I believe it is more if you are not a parishioner, but I am, so that's what it is.

yes... i would suggest that you call your church (or FH's church) ASAP to meet with a priest. He will explain all of this to you. basically, if you want your marriage to be recognized by the Church as a SACRAMENT, it must be done through the church, not a reception hall. you must complete Pre-Cana and have a priest or deacon marry you IN church in a ceremony or Nuptial Mass.
if you are an inter-faith couple, you still need to meet with a priest or deacon and make arrangements for Pre-cana and to discuss what needs to to be done in an inter-faith situation (there is a dispensation that needs to be completed) for the marriage to be a Sacrament for the Catholic.
None of the above needs to be done if you don't want it to be recognized as a Sacrament. if you get married at the hall, it's only recognized by the state, not the Church. HTH......

I think that is pretty normal. We are paying $500 for a priest at our RH.

This is ONLY true if you are marrying a baptized person. If your FH is Jewish or unbaptized, you can get married at your RH and still have it recognized in the Catholic church. If you are in this situation and want a priest to marry you at a RH, I'd recommend contacting Msgr. James Lisante (who is at St. Thomas the Apostle in West Hempstead). He does many interfaith weddings outside of the church.
If you are both baptized, though (even if you're not both Catholic) and want the marriage recognized in the church, you will have to get married in the church. Some priests will perform a ceremony in the church first and then do the big ceremony the day of at the RH.
However, if you are both baptized, your marriage won't be recognized by the Catholic church unless you are married in a church.
