Looking for hobbies for my dad

If you have responded to me on his situation (Thanks!) or just read my post on the brides board (you know what is going on), I am looking for hobbies for my dad who will be at home for the next 3+ months recovering from head trauma.
Soooo I am looking for hobbies to keep him occupied.

He reads the paper but is not a book reader. He is a handy man but fixing up the house is out Which was his passion. Anything that isn't strenous is what I am looking for.
Any ideas to avoid him driving us bonkers!!
Thanks again all of you.
Wanda

Re: Looking for hobbies for my dad

If he is handy, what about making models airplanes, boats, etc?

Would he like video games?

Re: Looking for hobbies for my dad

I got my husband a hand-held electronic Trivial Pursuit game at Toys R Us a few years back, and it keeps us occupied on long drives, and he uses it between appointments when he's early and has to wait in his car for a client to come home. It's a good way to pass some of the time.

How about archiving family photos? Would he enjoy putting them in an album and recording who is who? It's the sort of thing you never have time to do and it would be a wonderful family treasure to have. Group them by year or era.

How about doing a home inventory for insurance purposes, or using computer softwear to do some garden and landscaping design? I understand that the Sim City computer games can keep you occupied for months too.

Does he like to cook? He could practice some gourmet dishes.

Hope these help some.

Re: Looking for hobbies for my dad

I love cross word puzzles! You can buy books of them. I think I actually started doing them when I was down and out after having my appendix removed when I was 18. Also, games like chess or checkers if there is someone there, or solitaire if he is alone. 'Thinking' games are good for everyone. It helps prevent ahlzeimers by keeping your mind active I am glad to hear that your dad is doing better.

Re: Looking for hobbies for my dad

Thanks ALL!!
I don't know who mentioned it but he is an amazing cook! I can get him some gourmet recipes.
Thanks for that idea. He cooks better than my mom

Computer programs are also a good idea. He can do everything he wants to do on the house on the pc and when he is able to do the work, he has something to go by. I also thought of giving him access to my computer so that he can go online and do whatever. My pc is faster than his.
I have another one-he can build a computer for me. I have all these parts laying around the garage and no time to put it together.
And then there is also dvds. He can never have enough of those!!
Keep ideas coming! Thanks again.

Re: Looking for hobbies for my dad

since my dad's retirement he has changed the half of the basement that was his 'woodshop' to 'grand central station' (thats what he calls it)...he set up model trains and paints the buildings and everything...

hes a big gardener, but the trains keep him from going crazy in the winter...
