Looking to move to LI....

Hi ladies. Currently DH and I live in Staten Island and we are considering moving to LI. We want to be close to the Queen's border and the southern state because we both work in Brooklyn. I am interested in the Malverne area, how are the schools there?

How is the Valley Stream school district?

I used to work in New Hyde Park and I really liked the town; the houses were very pretty. I'm sorry I don't have a ton of info about the schools there though.

From a standpoint of a teacher, I'd say no to both valley stream and malverne as school districts

I agree, the schools in Franklin Square are much better than Valley Stream. I think they have the recent test scores online (newsday, maybe). Its been a long time since I've been in school in Franklin Square but I know they are still very good.

Re: Looking to move to LI....

I currently live and work in Brooklyn and my FH lives in New Hyde Park. We are looking to buy something in Queens. I personally love New Hyde Park, and Franklin Square. Garden City is outrageous in prices. However, Valley Stream is not so great so I am assuming the school district isn't either.

Another thing that I have noticed as well is that there is becoming a large drug population across New Hyde Park, Franklin Square, West Hempstead and the surrounding area. I am currently researching this all for a project that I am conducting for my social work studies. The rates are very alarming and not much is being caught nor even acknowledged. This is something also to keep in mind.

Willston Park is also a very nice area if you want to look around there as well. Floral park is also very nice too.

The morning commute for me coming from New Hyde Park to Brooklyn on weekday mornings varies between 30-60 mintues. Summer mornings are a blast, and get back to Brooklyn in less than 30 mintues. I get off of Sheepshead Bay exit. I leave about 7:30am and get into Brooklyn about 8:15am. So I hope this all helps you too.

I was born and raised in Suffolk, so I don't know *too* much about Nassau/Queens, but I will share what I know.

If you're looking for a good school district, Valley Stream is not the way to go. FH went to the one high school for the last 2 years of high school (graduated in 2001) and it wasn't that good then. I have never heard anything really positive about that district, so I personally would steer clear.

Floral Park or even Bellerose might be worth looking into.

I believe houses in Malverne are zoned for the valley stream school district. Can anyone confirm that?

Re: Looking to move to LI....

Not all houses in Malverne are zoned for VS. Most are zoned for Malverne SD

Parts of Valley Stream may be part of Hewlett-Woodmere, which is a good district. I do not live there but I work for HW. You have to do your homework.
