In addition to walking and/or doing the eliptical, try not eating or snacking after 7 or 8 o'clock at night. Sounds hard I know but I did it and lost 15 pounds.

i dont know what size she is......if it were me - id wait until my arms/legs/stomach were the size i wanted them to be before i started working them out for muscle tone - i see no point in building muscle under fat - especially the stomach.....i waited until i was the weight/size i wanted to be at before i started working out my arms, thighs and stomach and then i got muscle tone really quick....
i lost 35 pounds and when i started from that, i used weights. It didnt bulk me up at all and infact made my arms very lean. You will get big only if you use big weights, like 10 pounds, 25 pounds and so on. Same with my stomach and everything else, you dont get muscle right away, you have to work out quite a bit to get that muscle, at first you just burn that fat. I basically ONLY did strength training and i didnt get bulky or too muscular at all, i got lean. I cant do alot of aerobics or cardio bc i have a bad knee, so i had to do workouts that targeted specific areas without killing my knee. Trust me when you have fat it doesn't turn into muscle just like that.
and she only wants to lose 10 pounds so for her especially it will be no problem...i did strength training with 35 pounds to lose and it was fine
thats why they say not to use more than 5 pounds

i started using weights and doing cardio and my arms were not getting smaller - i also used the thigh machines at the gym and they were just staying the same as well....i wanted skinny arms and slim thighs.....as soon as i stopped using the weights and started doing just hardcore carido - eliptical, to the treadmill on a hill, to the stepper to the bike i finally got that thin look in my arms and legs....maybe everyone is different - but for me using weights was not making me any skinnier.....

mine got small real quick, i didnt use machines at all...just did arm workouts with weights, push ups and arm dips. I can't do treadmills, elliptical machines or anything like that unfortunately so i had no choice at all, if i do it i can only do it for a short period of time before my knee gives out and starts hurting alot. Again when you use weights you incorporate it with your exercise, and you have to make sure its 5 pounds or under, anything over that and you will bulk up. I lost 35-40 pounds in about 3 months, and the first week i started working out i lost 8 pounds which is alot but all i did was work out so i couldn't help it, after that i was losing about 3-4 pounds a week.
I did lots of pilates too...i dont know but for me its the opposite, i did force myself to run before i started really working out and doing strength training, it was stupid for me to do considering it was killing my knee but i forced myself. I ran alot but the weight was not coming off, for some reason cardio doesnt work as quick for me but it does depend on your body. All it did was cause me excruciating pain every night lol but that was my own stupidity

Using weights and doing cardio - even walking - will help you to lose weight faster than just doing cardio alone. Like some people said, you don't have to do a ton of weight lifting, just a little. You can buy weights at target, kmart, etc - 3lbs would be fine - and use them 3x a week (bicep curls, etc). Walk 4-5x a week for 30 mins. a day. You'll lose it!
Walking is GREAT for losing inches. I went to savannah, ga in 2005 and we walked A TON - like, 3-4 miles a day for 4 days - and even though I ate like a pig there (vacation and southern food!), I lost 10 lbs. In like 5 days. So you can DEFINITELY DO THIS.

yeah the combo of both are great. I know my friend wanted to lose about 40-50 pounds and she hired a personal trainer at the gym. He started her off hardcore with machines and weights and she lost alot of weight. I would throw in pilates to get a bit of a change, and loved it. THey say it gives you long lean muscles and at first i was like hmmm yeah ok but it really does

Def. a perfect start and I agree it is all about cardio, cardio, cardio and of course watching your diet. If you decide to do weights, go with what is most comfortable to you, low weight - high reps, you should be able to do at least 3 sets of 15 of an exercise but still feel the burn without overworking it. I only use a 10 pound weight when doing my arms even though I know I can do more just because I want to tone and not build muscle. You will def. be able to do this!!! Best of luck and keep us posted of your progress.

Re: loosing weight for the wedding (is it too late)
I joined weight watchers over a year ago and lost almost 20 lbs in 3 months safely. That was without working out. then i started doing 30 min. of cardio 5 days a week and I lost 10 more. I have kept if off for a year, and now i want to lose 10 more lbs by my wedding. 4 months to go! I'll be right there with you!

Re: loosing weight for the wedding (is it too late)
I agree with espo on this one.. My FH is a trainer and strength conditioning coach.. and since the workout he put me on to build muscle and also do cardio work, I have lost more inches than on any other workout plan. Traditionally, I would just run.. and run.. but I got to the point where I saw no results... with the strength training added, I see more definition in my body AND I am loosing inches.. even using moderate weights, 10 lbs, 15 lbs, I am just getting stronger, not bulking up... it takes a lot to bulk up ladies... so if you are interested more in inches than the weight... I say cardio and weight training is the way to go!
just my two cents..

i personally think you should add strength training and incorporate weights. I did weights only for my arms when i lost weight and they didn't become big and bulky at all. Infact strength training in the long run will help you burn more calories. WHen you do aerobics and things like that you are only burning calories for that amount of time you are working out. When you do strength training, muscle burns fat so even after you stop working out you will continue to burn fat throughout the day
I totally agree. I think its important to do a combo of cardio and strength training. You don't have to do much, either - weights for your arms, squats and lunges for your butt and legs, maybe some ab work on a stability ball...
