with much thought, we decided to go with the honeymoon... the place we wanted to buy from gave us a lot of drama which made us decide to walk away from the deal. we also saw that although a place of our own is an investment, this place probably won't rake in the $$$ as much as a place closer to the city where we work. we're going to wait til after the wedding and honeymoon and find a better place by the end of the year. we're going to go to our *once in a lifetime* honeymoon and enjoy ourselves as MR. & MRS. D.
Thank you so much for all your advice ladies, it was a tough decision, but I know we will definitely be happier... there's a time and place for everything.. with all the crap the people from this place gave us, we realized that it's not worth it.
updated from: so FH and i were supposed to close on this new condo we've been after for the last few months now with 5% down and us covering like $15k of closing (which was estimated to be around $35k but the seller was giving a 20k concession towards closing). however, the mortgage company we were dealing with screwed us over and even after getting a mortgage commitment, the deal with them fell thru.
so the sponsors of the condo got a new mortgage broker and they're working out a way for us to put down 10% and have our closing covered...
BUT with 10% down and closing covered, we're paying and extra $8k out of pocket.
we can't borrow $ from our parents cos they're already helping a LOT to pay for the wedding.
the only thing to cut back on for us to afford the condo is our honeymoon...
if we cancel our DREAM HM to tahiti, moorea, bora bora, then we'd have the $11k to use for the condo.
do i... cancel on the house? or cancel on the HM? it's so depressing..i wish i could have both, but yeah that's life...
any advice?

Re: major dilemma
You really have to think hard about that?....There is nothing like owning your own place.....together. You take an even longer honeymoon...NEXT YEAR. You're gonna be together forever...right?

Re: major dilemma
I agree. I think that I would use the money for the condo. You can always go on a big trip next year and just go on a smaller honeymoon. Good luck!

Re: major dilemma
Sorry that this is happening date twin.
But a honeymoon can happen whenever...a lifetime investment, is totally more stable. You never know you could get the house and within 2 years it could go up in value so much that you could get a better house AND go on and amazing dream honeymoon. Just a thought. Hope it all works out for you.

Re: major dilemma
11k honeymoon MINUS 8k for condo = 3k still left for an awesome honeymoon
take a smaller trip now .... go where you planned for your 1 year anniversary, or 5 year anniversary, etc .....

I totally agree with everyone else. Although I understand how important your honeymoon is to you, you can always take that trip later. Personally, I would get the condo now with a smaller less expensive honeymoon. Good Luck

Re: major dilemma
I have a different perspective. Never again will you and your new DH feel the bliss of being a newlywed, except right after your wedding. The housing market is expected to be 'buyer friendly' for another couple of years. I think you should go on your dream honeymoon. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity when you add in the emotional factors that just can't be recreated a year from now. As far as your condo is concerned.....I suggest using the motto, 'if it doesn't flow, it doesn't go'. Yes, you will always need to make sacrifices to own a nice home....but your honeymoon????? The housing market is saturated with good deals right now and will continue to be. You'll spend the rest of your life living day to day, paying for your new home. Go on your dream vacation. You may not even want to go next year (mortgage, home improvement, promotion, pregnancy, etc. etc.). Go Now and Indulge when you can! The condo will be here when you get back.

Re: major dilemma
I know that this is a hard decision, both wanting your first home and the HM of your dreams. But IMO I would cancel the HM and get the condo. I agree with the other girls you can still ultimately go on the trip of your dreams just maybe do it for an anniversary or other special time later. Yes its true there will never be another time quite like right after your wedding...but that also helps to know that wherever you go will be amazing to you and FH. You are going to be so thrilled that the two of you are married that your HM (while not maybe your orignial plan) will still be awesome. Then you get to come home to your new home! You will also have that dream vacation to look forward to in the future. FH and I cut back on our HM to purchase our house and at first I was a bit sad about the HM but I can tell you the satisfaction we have knowing that we have our own home is such a great feeling. Consider it not only an investment in your future but a present to you and FH for your married life as you begin it together. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Re: major dilemma
I agree. I would definately cancel your honeymoon. You still have 3k to go somewhere all inclusive in the caribbean or mexico or something! You can always save up again and go in a year!

Re: major dilemma
Cancel the Honeymoon!!! Owning your own place is financially beneficial to you both for years and years... the honeymoon is short lived!! You can still afford a honeymoon,,just not that extravegant!!
BUY THE CONDO!!!!! Join the Homeowners world!!! It's a fun place to be!!! you won't regret it!!!!
Just for the tax benefit alone you'd be able to afford Bora Bora next year for 1 year anniversay!!!!

thats a great idea- you could go on a cruise easily for $3k and get a suite- we are going on a 7day Caribbean Cruise with a suite and after 3 days of hotel in South Beach & airfare its slightly lower than $3k

Re: major dilemma
I would honestly cancel the HM. You can still go on a great HM for 3K and put the other 8 towards the condo.
