People who turn their nose up because you didn't hand out a trinket are idiots. Ignore them.
Not having favors is your choice. If you can't afford it, don't do it. People who tell you you MUST have favors are the same kind of people as in my comment above.
Don't worry about it. Most people won't notice or care.

Re: Make me feel better....
Don't feel bad at all about not having favors. Having favors will not make your wedding better one way or another, nor will your guests enjoy themselves any more or less. Maybe it's because I've mostly gone to Jewish weddings, which don't traditionally have favors, but i never think twice about there not being a favor at a wedding. And in all honestly, the times when I do get favors, I usually think, 'great, something else to collect dust.' Favors do not show your friends and family how much you appreciate them being at your wedding - that's what your thank you note is for. They know they are appreciated just because they were invited.

You are not being cheap at all. I have to make some cuts myself and believe me the favors are the first thing to go. Most favors I've seen from the weddings I've been to have just been stuffed in a drawer or wind up left behind on the table or in the garbage. If people can afford favors, by all means go for it! If you're on a budget like myself, I say scratch them.

I think you need to go with a decision you can afford and be comfortable with. IMO- if you decide you need to give something i would choose candy rather than a cheap trinket- which either get thrown out or add to clutter in my experience.

Do what you like. It is your wedding. Personally, I do keep favors, but I am a sentimental sap. Most people don't notice, and IMO those who do are looking...ya know? Your marriage is what's important, not the guests opinions. If you wanted to do something afterward, you could always send a little something with the thank you. ( A friend of mine actually did this & I thought it was nice.)
I also heard a very funny story today about how a girl that I work with went crazy trying to come up with very unique favors & she spent alot of time & $$ on them. After she left the room, another girl I work with who was a guest told me that they were not so attractive & that she 're-gifted' the favor! I thouight it was amusing, and yet very sad as well.

Wow, who knew favors were such a hot topic? If you do decide to give something why not give one per couple, that will cut your # nearly in half. Whatever you do have fun doing it. If it turns into a chore then it may not be worth it.

if you can not afford favors then do not have them.
we are not doing favors at our wedding, we are making a small donation instead and printing scrolls for our guests.

If you really look around, you can find things that are cheap enough. Wholesalefavors.com has picture frames that can double as placecards for under a dollar. I paid like $.81 cents per frame for mine. Only do this if you really feel chepa. Do what makes YOU feel better. Just my two cents

Re: Make me feel better....
I've never been to a wedding where I didn't get a favor, but honestly, I threw them all out except one the ones that were chocolaote and the personalized champagne glas when I was a MOH ( tiny wedding)
Instead of wine, i've heard of someone givivng out tiny liqour botles, with a persoanlized tag ( the kind they sell at the register at the liquor store) that migh tbe less expensive.
Most peopel won't notice-- as with everything a few peopel will care, but won't say it to you.
Do whatcha gotta do. You sound liek you wna tto if you could, so mayeb look into an inexpensive idea, but if you can't, you can't.
Its odd, but my dad jokes that the 'right ' kind of favors were my grandmother's ( mom's side) biggest concern when they got married, and although my mom says she doesn't remember that, that's one of the first things she asked me about. And we don't even have a hall booked yet!
