make-up dilemma

make-up dilemma

I did my first hair and make-up trial last week and I LOOVED the hair but was not crazy about the make-up. It's a mother-daughter team, and at the time I felt that I could settle for the make-up, so I left a deposit for both. Now I'm having doubts about the MU, but not the hair. What should I do? I want to cancel the MU and keep the hair, but I feel bad because they're mother and daughter, and because I should have just spoken up more at the trial. :( Advice?

in all honesty, this is your wedding and everything should be the way YOU want it. as long as you break the news in a respectful way, everything should be fine. Or you might just have to consider someone else for your hair...hope that helps!

I did 2 trials for my hair and makeup...heres my advice....

If you think the makeup girl has the skill to execute what you want done, I wouldn't cancel her (at least not yet). I would schedule another trial and really try to communicate what you didn't like and what you want changed. If you still don't like it then I would probably cancel and look for someone else. I have found that whatever I did not like about my trials had nothing to do with their ability as a hair stylists/makeup artists but rather my communication was poor. Once I really sat down and expressed everything I could, it worked much better.

Mother/daughter team shouldn't sway your decision though IMO....It's your wedding and don't sacrifice your makeup and the way you feel about your look because you might offend someone....HTH

Re: make-up dilemma

I know I'm definitely not good at communicating what MU I like...I have always done my own makeup and I never go outside my comfort zone. Now that I'm having someone else do it, I know that I want something that pops, but I have no idea what that might be! Unfortunately, the only things I can think of to say are negative/criticisms. Like, I didn't like how 'caked-on' and orange the foundation looked, and the shadow was nothing special. I'm not sure if this girl has the ability -- her own makeup looked nice (as in not caked-on). What I want is my natural look, but more/better!

Another thing that's holding me back/making me feel guilty is that I didn't tip them for the trial. I didn't know if I should have, or if I should just save it for the wedding day, which is what I decided to do. But now I feel bad about that too! I'm thinking of scheduling another makeup trial with the same girl, but I feel awkward because of the no-tip thing.

Don't worry about the no tip thing...It's done already. If you do make another appointment with her I personally would tip...even if you don't plan on using her for your wedding.

As far as the make up application...I would say something like 'I felt that the foundation was very heavy....I'm not used to wearing much makeup at all....Can you make it look very natural but yet still make my eyes 'pop'? I want to look like myself with a little mre oomph!' These artists are used to having people tell them what they do and don't like. She wont take it personal....and if she did, drop her like a bad habit lollll. Another thing I found helpful was to make sure I'm in front of a mirror when they are doing their work...I kind of guided them if I saw them doing something I didn't like. Again, It's your wedding and you should look exactly how you want to look....DO NOT WORRY ABOUT OFFENDING ANYONE....Whether you end up using this girl or not....it's going to turn out great!!!
