Hi everyone! I have been doing people's make-up for years. I do mostly friends and family and then they refer me to their friends, etc. I would like to do this as a business, but I was wondering if you guys think I need to get certified first. I am afraid people will be sceptical if I don't have a certificate/diploma. What do you think?

Re: Make up question
To be honest, I wouldn't even think to ask someone if they had a certificate or a dipolma. If they are good and people recommend them then that is what I go with.
I wish you lots of luck with this!

Re: Make up question
I go by word of mouth and by what other people's experiences were with that person...there are few situations where I would want to see certification...good luck

Re: Make up question
Word of mouth is great. You should start making a portfolio of before and after shots. Another thing you may consider is offering REALLY competitive prices until you start getting more established and a larger reputation.

Re: Make up question
I definatly think word of mouth and a portfolio speaks to a thousand certificates. I honestly never asked, and I went to a few.
The only thing with Certification, you may learn things that you don't already know, that may even improve your technique. Go for Certification if you want to learn more, but I don't think a piece of paper will get you more clients.

Re: Make up question
Get really experienced with doing make up for photoshoots.
Call up photographers, who do tests for models and see if you could work together. Build your portfolio from there.
good luck!!

Re: Make up question
i go by how a person does their own makeup, too. but word of mouth is huge!!! however, going for more formal training may introduce you to techniques you did not know. also, what about getting a side job with mac or bobbi brown, too? not like you have the timr (or maybe you do...) but either way, go for it. it sounds like a lot of fun!

Re: Make up question
the lady who did my makeup was doing it the same as you...on the side. If you wanted to advertise and such, then go for certification, but if it's just for some extra cash.....it's up to you. But always have a portfolio of before/after shots and letters and thank yous from the ladies you do makeup for.

Re: Make up question
I agree with the other girls..
I go by word of mouth.. but the certificate may help you gear towards more formal stuff and teach you how to make it stay longer or something...?????

Re: Make up question
I went by word of mouth and pics of the artists work. It never occured to me to ask for a certificate. I don't even know if my hair and makeup people have them.
