Makeup 'color scheme'

Makeup 'color scheme'

I'm a redhead with fair skin and freckles. My dress is white with blue, pink and green embroidery in the bodice.

Do you have some suggestions on the 'color scheme' for makeup for me?

I don't normally wear makeup at all and I guess I need to know eye shadow color and lip color.

It's a Sunday afternoon wedding in June, so the makeup should be light in the first place.

I'm sure my makeup girl will have suggestions but I wanted to get ideas from the source!!

what color eyes do you have? Eye shadow color should complement your eye color... it really has nothing to do with what color you're wearing. And if you go dramatic on the eyes, you go softer on the lips.

If you've never worn makeup, you might want to go 'shopping' at a department store and let different girls do your makeup (don't tell them it's a makeup trial... just go under the pretense that you're looking for a new look. Then you don't have to buy anything). You can get some ideas that way.

I agree. I've been trying things out at the dept stores to get ideas. You can even go to Ulta. They're dying to put makeup on you in that store.

For redheads with freckles, i'm thinking maybe a lightly done green for the shadow and eyeliner?

or neutral earthtones, soft browns?

not sure b/c i'm brown hair brown eyes.

let us know what you end up with! good luck!

Sorry, forgot about eye color! They're blue.

Green is my favorite color (as you might notice by my username) but then I guess the lips would have to be pink?

That's a great idea about the department stores. I've been told that browns and oranges are right for my coloring but it seems too dark/somber for a June wedding, you know?

If green is your favorite color, I'm sure a makeup artist could make it work for your eyes.

the lips don't necessarily have to be pink. there are lots of lovely shades of what they're calling 'beige' - the name doesn't do it justice, it has just a hint of light soft brown to it and just a hint of maybe more of a mauve............and you top it off with a nice gloss. it could go really well.

I think Estee Lauder has really nice neutral but pretty lip colors and their lipsticks are creamy and comfortable. If you can take a trip to Macy's and try there, it would be a good start for you before you start paying money for trials.

Ooooh man, I was just in Macy's last night! They have this awesome ginger soap under the Origins name. But they don't sell it in Sunrise Mall, only in Walt Whitman mall. So I walked out empty handed.

That actually sounds nice, a muted beige or brown with a hint of pink. Then the eyeshadow could match.

I would love to have green, I just don't want to make a fashion mistake because I'm blinded by my love for the color!

Hi there-

I don’t know if you read my review or not but I had similar issues with makeup because I don’t wear a lot and prefer a more natural look.

I also am Irish and have pretty fair skin myself. I would definitely recommend checking out Sephora. I ended up there (the Walt Whitman branch) because after several disastrous attempts at both the MAC makeup counter and at a private salon I had came out looking like a prostitute and had to pay both places for their services. At Sephora they will try makeup on you for FREE which is something I didn’t know previously. I found a fantastic makeup artist there who shared my whole less is more philosophy.

Also, and I’m sure you’ve been told this before, try and find someone to help you who is wearing make up that you like (i.e. if they themselves are wearing crazy makeup, chances are they will put some crazy make up on you.).

Since you mentioned you’re fair with red hair and freckles, I totally agree with the brown comments. Brown mascara would be better than black which would be too harsh for you. But brown doesn’t have to be boring- champagne colors would probably look great on you. And pinkish colored lipsticks would probably be better than reds which again can be too harsh against fair skin. Also don’t let them try and cover up your freckles with heavy foundation. In my opion this always looks ridiculous. Obviously you have freckles, work with them. Sheisedo and Paula Dorff make great tinted moisturizers that double as foundation that let your freckles show through but still even out your skin tone and give you coverage. I’ve used the Shiseido one for years and love it.

Also, don’t let people convince you that you have to wear a ton of makeup for the pictures. True, you should probably wear a bit more – but you don’t need layers of make up for the camera. Bottom line – you should still be able to see you – your face, not the make up when their done.

Sorry, I know this is much more info than you asked for, but after my experience I have a lot to say on the subject!

Good luck!

heather, no worries about a long post, I love them! Great info there, I will definitely impart that to my makeup girl. And Walt Whitman is fairly close to where I work so I could swing by there anytime.

You don't happen to recall the name of your makeup artist, do you? The brown eyeshadow is a great tip because my eyelashes are unnaturally long and I think you're right about the black.

My freckles are most prominent on my shoulders and face, and I have an off the shoulder dress, so there's no hiding them. I don't mind. It's a part of me! I don't want my face to be non-freckled when the rest of my body isn't, that would just be too strange!

Thanks again, I appreciate the comments!
