I always bring something but I never look at other people badly if they do not bring anything.

Re: Manners/upbringing
I always bring something to someone's house and always honestly and sincerely tell our guests that they don't need to bring anything at all. So I wouldn't think its rude if they didnt when I am insisting they don't.

I always bring something, whether it be wine, dessert or a home gift....I think it is very rude if you do not.

Christine. Im the same. Lots of times i'll someone thats coming over 'DONT YOU DARE GET ANYTHING we have plenty of dessert, cookies, ice cream, etc, dont waste your money' and some really dont bring anything, and id rather they didnt waste the money and the food. sometimes dessert can get overboard and you have SOOO much leftover. one mothers day I had 6 cakes left over. I brought them to work and they were gone in an hour !

Re: Manners/upbringing
I agree that you never go emptyhanded when invited for dinner or a party at someones house.
I think again it depends on where you were raised.
My law professor was telling us a story when she was living somewhere in the midwest and she went to a dinner and brought a bottle of wine - The judge who was at the dinner leaned over and told her not to bring something again - b/c out there it was considered rude to bring something - It implied that the host did not know how to properly throw a party and by bringing something you are assuming that they did not know better than to have wine.
Apparently the rule there is that you are supposed to reciprocate with a dinner party of your own where you invite the person who had you

I never show up empty handed because that's the way I was raised. I'll usually bring wine or dessert. But I don't really get offended if I have a party and people show up empty handed. I think it's uncommon though.

Re: Manners/upbringing
I always bring something, I guess I was taught that when I young. And always bring what you will be drinking. Although it does happen sometimes that I bring one thing and get swayed into another!
It seems amongst my friends and family we never have small get togethers so everyone really helps out when someone else hosts. Its not expected, but everyone will pitch in and bring an appetizer or dessert, etc... We end up having so much stuff I can't even keep track of who brought what and who didn't.
And recently, hostess gifts have become popular! For example, at our last BBQ (small crowd, only 30 people! LOL) my friend brought me a lovely hanging plant for my porch, and my aunt brought a brass candle snuffer. Both not necessary, but very, very sweet.

i always bring something... i think its the upbringing that alot of people just dont anymore... but seriously if you cant bake or cook you can always pick up a bottle of wine or dessert cheap...

I always bring something.
But I hate when people bring something for themself. - Like a person bringing their own Diet Coke!!! That to me seems like a 'I couldn't rely on you to have this'. Cake/dessert or a bottle of wine are always nice things to bring someone.

Re: Manners/upbringing
I usually bring dessert or wine if it is a party at a close friend's house. If I don't know them very well, I don't want to insult the meal they have prepared by imposing my wine or dessert choice, so I bring flowers.

You should always bring something - for BBQs I would call ahead and ask if there's something in particular that might be nice

I always bring something. If I'm told 'don't bring anything but yourself ~ we have plenty of everything' I either bring flowers, toys for the kiddies, or if there are no kids, I've been known to bring dog or cat treats!

Re: Manners/upbringing
I always bring something. It is definatly the upbringing.
Even when we get invited out to a friends for diner and they tell us not to bring something, I just feel weird if i dont bring something. I bring either a small bottle of wine or maybe some pastries. I just cant get invited to someone's for diner or a BBQ and just not bring something.
