Re: Marijuana- Should it be legalized?

I do feel that the Rockerfeller laws that 'require judges to give drug offenders mandatory minimum sentences regardless of their background, character, role in the offense, or threat to society... [and] restrict the ability of judges to divert appropriate offenders into treatment...' is ridiculous. (www.drugpolicy.org) This punishes even the first time user or offender without offering them rehabilitation or education.

Anyway, I am sorry if marijuana harmed or ruined any of your lives, or the lives of your friends or family. But for every one of you with a story like that, I'm sure there are dozens more who have had the same lives or friends' and families' lives ruined by alcohol, and the effects of smoking (lung cancer, etc.). We as a society need to put more blame on the individual and not look to the government to parent our children or to tell people how to live their lives. If an underage kid wants to try alcohol or cigarettes - they will find a way to. If someone wants to try marijuana - they will find a way to.

There are (even on this post) many valid arguments both for and against the legalization of marijuana. I just hope that this forum continues to be a venue for each of us to be able to express our opinions without judgment and insult.

Edited posts that should have taken place as an exchange through FM and not the general forum.

And for hugs

I'm 27 and been through 2 bouts of cancer. I never smoked marijuana to feel better, although it does increase your appetite or not make you nausea. As for morphine, yes when you are in pain it makes you feel better, but there other these other side effects that come along with it that what makes people become addicted to it, like a feeling of euphoria, same as many other pain killers or any drug for that matter. That's why people do drugs, b/c they make you feel good. Wait, I am getting off topic, I guess my point is, I think those who want to smoke pot, smoke it. I don't know anyone who was like no I can't b/c it's illegal. So whether they make it legal or not, the fact remains the same, people are going to drugs, that's the bottom line. Everyone has vices, I think it's human nature, but some people pick things that are more acceptable (not necessarily less harmful) and it's just easier for people to except.

I don't think legalization will that big of an impact on WHO will smoke. I just think it'll take a strain off of our legal system and keep kids from exposure to hamful chemicals, and interaction with dangerous drug dealers.

Yes, I think it should be legalized.. for all the valid reasons already given.
