Re: Marijuana- Should it be legalized?

Wow, this was an interesting thread. I read through it because I have this discussion all the time. I am not a fan of pot.

However the bottom line is that sooooooooo many people smoke pot - people you wouldn't even think do it, do it - so they will do it whether it's legal or not and those who won't, won't.

But even I don't understand why it's illegal when cigarettes and alcohol are legal. They are all just as dangerous to me so they should all be legal, or illegal.

I think it should be legalized. I feel that when you prohibit someone from doing something, they want it more!!

Also, I agree that alcohol and cigarettes can be and are just as dangerous!

I think smoking pot with a rabbi IS a funny story.

I knew some people who smoked with our teachers in HS.

And this is at the BEST high school in the city, if not the country...haha...

Also, the biggest potheads were the MOST successful kids. Most of them went to HArvard and Yale. How they pulled it off, I have NO idea, but they did.

I think it should be legalized both for medical purposes, and recreationally. It should be regulated similar to alcohol, like you cant drive under the influence, you must be 21 to use it, not out in the street or anything, etc. It really does do wonders for people with cancer and other medical conditions, and is safer than many of the legal prescription drugs out there. People with cancer really do suffer, and if pot helps them with the nasty side effects of chemo and improves thier quality of life, then they should have it available to them. I can think of many other legal prescription drugs that are much more detramental than pot, one being Oxycontin.

As far as recreationally, as long as the user is a responsible adult, I dont see why they cant use it. You really cant OD on pot, and I have NEVER seen anyone come into the ER for a pot overdose, although I see at least one person a week die related to chronic alcohol use. And some of these people are in thier 30's.

Rabbis at a Grateful Dead show????? NO WAY.

Next you'll be telling me that Jews like Phish too!!!!!!! Rediculous!

(that was a Joke)

I just wanted to point out the irony of people talking about how Pot affects one's performance at work (ie, spending work time on personal issues). Who needs pot for that - we've got LIWeddings!!!!!!!!!!!

I hate pot. Can't stand it. Stopped seeing Phish, my favorite band, in concert because I'm always ill for a week after being around pot. Am very close to discontinuing concert attendance altogether because of inconsiderate potheads.

However, I think it should be legalized for private home use because it's no more or less harmful than regular cigarrettes or alcohol is. Sure you can talk about lives being ruined by pot, but the same goes for tobacco and alcohol, and any number of other things.

Regular cigarrettes are more of a problem for me. I'm VERY tired of smokers complaining about having to go outside. You smoke, Mr., you have an Odious Personal Habit. Don't make me suffer while you feed your addiction. I have an addiction - Chocolate and food in general. But if someone doesn't want to eat, or can't eat, I won't eat in front of them. It's called common courtesy.

I feel about this the way I feel about many things - do what you want just keep it away from me.

I stated my position already, but I wanted to comment because I too went to college with someone who was high (on what, I don't know) more often than not. He graduated from our college's honors program in psych with a 3.8. How, I have no idea.

I don't know anyone who was like no I can't b/c it's illegal. So whether they make it legal or not, the fact remains the same, people are going to drugs, that's the bottom line.

Actually it being illegal is the one and only reason I don't smoke..I don't want any problems in my life. I don't see anything wrong if an adult wants to smoke

there are two sides. For some people, it being illegal won't stop them, but here;s the thing, most jobs require drugs testing at least upon employment. I would hate to lose a job over it

I don't think it's funny - I think it's a pretty SAD example of what's wrong with some of society today!

The teachers smoking with the kids is funny and sad,

the rabbi is just funny.

A far as cancer goes, marijuana DOES NOT prevent it--it helps take away the nausea from the chemo---when my brother went thru it--him smoking releived him quite a bit from the horrible effects of chemo--

As far as making it legal--I dont think its necessary--its usually pretty easy to find--just do it in the comfort of your own home--and be discreet--it works good enogh for the rest of the world--no sense in legalizing it

ABSOLUTELY NO!!!!!

I don't see why it shouldn't be legalized. If anything, I think alcohol does more of a number on your mind than pot does. I kind of equate the two as pretty similar.

Re: Marijuana- Should it be legalized?

I lived in California when this issue was on the ballot for a vote - for medicinal marijuana, that is. I also volunteered for a program that assisted AIDS patients and discovered many of them use it as well. The law passed because the majority of the population was in favor of it, but the federal gov't got involved and they might still be fighting it out, I am not sure.

I totally support medicinal marijuana and have no problem with it. However, I am not sure about for recreational use. I do think it can lead to use of other, more harmful drugs and it is not as harmless as some seem to think. However, I agree that the Rockerfeller laws are too harsh and need to be revisited.

Re: Marijuana- Should it be legalized?

See I guess I don't see it leading to harmful things because I've smoked random times in my life, and that's the most I've done. I never did anything worse than that. It depends on the person. If a person's going to do other drugs, bottom line is they're going to do it.
