Marijuana- Should it be legalized?

This is not a topic I feel strongly about either way, but I do think the argument is stronger FOR legalization.

If you legalize the drug, it can be regulated, therefore people won't be getting anything with any kind of poisonous chemicals in it, and you would of course make it like alcohol...you can't drive while under the influence. Also, people will buy the drug in a store and won't be exposed to the dangers of drug dealers, etc.

They say Marijuana is a gateway drug, but I think this is at least partially attributed to the fact that people have to buy it from street drug dealers who after selling them the mj, will look to sell them other, harder drugs. If marijuana is bought in a drug store, people won't be exposed to those harder drugs. People who smoke cigarettes don't switch to ahrder drugs, because they buy it in a drug store, but I think if they had to buy it from a dealer who said 'oh, try this..' they'd be more likely to move on to harder stuff.

Marijuana is not shown to be physically addictive. Plenty of substances that ARE addicitve are allowed. Alcoholo, tobacco, pain killers, etc.

You shouldn;t drive while on vicodin, it impairs your judgement and it has significant potential for abuse, but it's completely legal, but regulated. This is why I especially don't see why medical marijuana is outlawed.

Another big argument people give againt the legalization of marijuana is the slippery slope..that next we'll legalize crack or something, but the truth is that there is a HUGE difference between marijuana and crack. HUGE. Crack is much more addicitive and causes far worse physical effects. Also, you can't OD on marijuana.

YES YES YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But it's a hallucenogenic drug...look at what happens when someone drinks and gets behind the wheel...imagine being stoned, and then trying to drive!!??

Just too much exposure for abuse!

edited for spelling

Are you sure about it being a hallucenogenic?

Honestly.....its a lot worse to drive drunk than high

Re: Marijuana- Should it be legalized?

I did a term paper in college on the legalization of marijuana, and used data from many studies done in and on Amsterdam. The crime rate is comparitively lower, as is the money spent on arresting, processing, jailing, etc. on people arrested for simple possession crimes. (It was five years ago and I don't remember much of it.)

I don't think legalizing it will be detrimental to our society - I think it would improve it. Look at what prohibition did to our society - it increased crime (especially 'organized' crime), it increased the incidents of alcohol poisoning (from home-made 'bath tub gin') and many more things that I just can't remember right now.

I do think it should hold the same regulations as alcohol (age limits, prohibited to drive while under the influence, illegal to indulge in on the streets or in public places, etc.) and it should be taxed the same way as cigarettes. (But our government makes so much more money from it being illegal, doesn't it - so I doubt it will ever be legal.)

Alcohol makes people belligerent - marijuana really doesn't. I would rather socialize with mellowed 'pot heads' than raging drunks any day. I never have smoked cigarettes even though they are legal - the smell and the idea of being addicted to something make me sick - and I feel that the same would happen with legalized marijuana.

I could go on and on...

Could you imagine how much fun it would be to go to a abr if everyone were stoned instead of drunk?

There wouldn't be any bar fights, i can tell you that...and they'd make a LOT of money selling wings!

I do NOT believe that pot is detrimental, and I fully understand that some people may not agree with me. I do NOT believe that pot is a 'gateway' drug. Some people are more likely than others to experiment and pot has nothing to do with it.

I have to disagree with you on this.
Smoking pot almost ruined my brother's life. it CAN be incredibly harmful for people. It CAN be addictive. It CAN be a gateway to other drugs.
I think people thinking it is harmless is what leads it to becoming harmful.

I've never done it before so I cannot say the effects it has on a person, but I don't really think it should be legalized. This is a tough question !!

I think it should be legalized. It seems to me as if alcohol, which is legal, causes more problems to people than weed. You rarely if ever see a person being arrested for erratic behavior (i.e domestic abuse) when they are high on pot. They are too sleepy.

Although marijuana may not be physically addictive to everyone, studies also show that there is a diminished brain functioning and deterioration of brain cells and that in and of itself is scary. I saw the difference between a non-pot brain and one of a pot user and there was a mrked difference.

I was in Amsterdam a few years ago and had to go to the police station (one of the girls I was with had her bag taken, which she got back sans cash but with her passport). And imagine our surprise when the officer who took her initial information lit up a joint when he was done helping us!

I know someone who has held the same job for many, many years, been a responsible citizen, tax payer, great parent, etc. who from time to time likes to smoke a joint. If it were legalized I doubt this person would go nuts and begin smoking it daily. This person has never missed work or other obligations because of being high.

Personally, if it were legal, I know it would not make me or my friends want to smoke it. I don't think legalizing pot would sharply increase the number of users. It's so easy to get (and grow) now.

I tried pot once and didn't like it. If I had, the issue of legality would not have meant much to me. I don't think that the current illegality is much of a deterrant, but I am just speculating.

So am i to assume you believe in the legalizations of ALL drugs?
Because i really think the crime that you are talking about isn't really about marijuana ALONE but rather cocaine and other such drugs

I definitely think it should be legalized. I just don't see the big deal.

yup...nuff said

I don't have a solid stand either way. People are going to use it whether it's legal or not. Look at the stupid crap kids are doing now to get a rush (morning glory seeds, sniffing inhalants, etc.).

I am not trying to belittle what happened with your brother. I don't doubt that pot CAN be harmful to some people. I don't doubt that pot CAN be addictive to people who already have addictive personalities. And I don't doubt that pot CAN be a stepping stone to more drugs. BUT, to not take all of the other factors into consideration is unfair. I don't want to point a finger at your brother so I will use my own former cokehead sister as an example.
Was my sister ever addicted to pot? No, but that's because the fact of the mater is, it puts her to sleep (it's actually kind of funny.) Was pot the first drug she ever did? Um, yeah. It's the first, and for many people the ONLY, drug they ever do. Why? Because it's easily accessable, especially to younger people. So why did my sister become a drug addict? Because she has an addictive personality and she was not happy within herself and drugs filled some kind of void. I'm sorry, but I place some of the blame on the person who's addicted to the drug, not just the drug itself.

Why bother legalizing it? It is so easily accesible now, if people want it they can always find it and if the government got its hands on it the price would probably go up (like with everything else)!

Re: Marijuana- Should it be legalized?

because I actually know several people who had thier time wasted, and the govt's money wasted arresting them on stupid possession charges...and there are thousands of these every year..it's such a waste of $$ and police power
