Marriage license?????

Marriage license?????

First question: Isn't the Nassau location to apply for a license in Hempstead? Where? What time are they open/days?

Second question: Our wedding is July 22. Okay, so I'm out of town until Friday then I leave again Monday night. Then when I come back next Friday, FH leaves to go out of town the entire week during the 4th of July. Then we are looking at around July 6th or 7th for him to return, but I'm not sure if you can go down and apply on weekends? So that leaves us like 2 weeks - is that enough time? Is there something that needs to be mailed back? Should I plan on taking some time on Friday of this week or Monday of next to get the process started? I'm also concerned that FH's divorce decree is not certified. What happens if you don't get the paperwork filed in time? What is the worse case scenerio here?

Two weeks should be fine. You will need to go to the town clerk, both fill out a license, and get it to your officiant during that period.

1) You can apply anywhere in NY state. Here's a list of town halls in Nassau County, but don't feel you're limited to that one.

The page above has links to all the town clerks in Nassau. The one to Hempstead is here. Hours and info are on this page.

2) Both of you must show up in person to apply for the license and all the town halls in Long Island are open only on weekdays. Yes, you will probably have to take time off. Call ahead to make sure the office is open. We got our license on Good Friday (the Friday before Easter) and some offices were closed even though it's not a government holiday.

You fill in the license at the office--you can get married the period starting 24 hours after you fill it out and 60 days. Give a copy to your officiant. The officiant and your two witnesses subsequently fill in their sections on your wedding day. It's then mailed back to the gov't. (our officiant did this for us). You receive the official copy 3-4 weeks later.

You will need to bring some ID (details in the links above). Since your FI is divorced, he needs to bring a certified copy of the divorce documentation. Worst case scenario, they won't fill out the license.
