Marriage License Application (ONLINE) HELP!!

I’m filling out the application online and we are going next Friday to do everything in person (show id and what not). It asks for my new 'surname” do I have to know right now what I'm changing my name to?? We haven't decided if I’m just going to hyphenate, keep my own name, or something else.

Re: Marriage License Application (ONLINE) HELP!!

I'm so confused...does that mean when we get the certificate in the mail its going to have the information printed on it. I don't want to have the wrong info on it. Maybe i should call.

My certificate is at home so I can't say for sure but I am almost positive that it says my new last name will be just his.

Re: Marriage License Application (ONLINE) HELP!!

Do they make you do it online? Maybe you can fill it out there and just ask them?

Re: Marriage License Application (ONLINE) HELP!!

You fill it out online, they email you a confirmation, then you go to the office. I'm guessing its a way to save time I'm not sure though.

Re: Marriage License Application (ONLINE) HELP!!

You can put FH's last name even if you are unsure if you plan on using it. Once you get married, you do not lose the right to use your maiden name - you can continue to use it as long as you have no intent to defraud.

I plan on keeping my last name but putting FH's on the marriage license in case I decide later on (when we have children) to use his name.

Re: Marriage License Application (ONLINE) HELP!!

It says online:
* You must state your choice of surname on the application. If you elect to make a surname change on your application, the surname change takes legal effect at the conclusion of the Marriage Ceremony.
* If you wish to change your surname through this office after your Marriage Ceremony, you must remarry.
* Although you may correct mistakes in your Certificate of Marriage Registration, a surname choice is not considered a mistake and cannot be changed through our Amendment process.

HTH

Re: Marriage License Application (ONLINE) HELP!!

We filled ours out online today too. FH did it. I was back and forth on whether to hyphenate so I just kept my own name. Apparently, i will need to remarry as far as the city clerk is concerned if I change later - so be it!

On the topic - has anyone gone in Manhattan for their license. How long did it take you?

I thought this too but was later told this could raise issues as I will have no proof of retained name. Normally I would just go with it but since I am a licensed professional I decided I was not risking paperwork drama.

I went there right when they opened (at 8:30) and I was out by 9:10... If you get there like 15-20 minutes before they open you will probably be out by 8:40!

Re: Marriage License Application (ONLINE) HELP!!

When we went down in person they ask you what your new surname will be but it also asked for my current. So there should be an area for both.

Even as a licensed professional, you don't need to have proof of the retained name. One of my best friends is a family law attorney and deals with name changes all the time. I have specifically asked him this question. His wife (an RN who is licensed under her maiden name) drove him nuts when they were getting married over the same issue.

My concern is when you need to present your marriage license. I am applying for dual citizenship (in europe) and will have to provide a marriage license - when you do this and it has a different name I worry that paperwork processes will be more diffult. I think this is true for certain insurance, etc. but I could be wrong.

Re: Marriage License Application (ONLINE) HELP!!

Is there a registration website for Suffolk County? This is only for a marriage license in NYC.
