Marriage License Question

Hey Ladies.....

I have a question...when you went for your marriage license-did you need your original birth certifcate or could it be a copy?
My parents lost mine and I have to order a new one and I don't know how long it will take to get a new one...Thanks!!!

We went to the one in Queens around Rego Park area, and they didn't even ask for it. All they took were our licences for verification.

all you need is a driver's license

If you go to one of the five NYC boroughs, you only need picture ID (ex: license or passport).

If you go outside of NYC, you will need your original birth certificate or a certified copy with a raised seal.

If you request a certified copy, it will usually take about 2 weeks to receive.

Does some one have the website with the various locations? We live in Fresh Meadows, Queens but heard that they take FOREVER that it will be faster in Nassau. And do we need witnesses?

I got a certified copy right then and there when I went in-maybe they all do it different. But it took about 5 minutes

Re: Marriage License Question

This is DIRECTLY off of the Town Of Hempstead (Nassau County) Marriage Department's Website:

The Town Clerk is responsible for issuing a New York State Marriage License to qualified applicants as well as recording the marriage with the New York State Department of Health. The marriage record is on file in this office and in Albany.

Licenses to marry in New York State may be obtained from the Town Clerk's office regardless of the residence of either of the parties. Once the license is issued and the 24-hour waiting period has passed, the ceremony may be performed anywhere in the state. The requirements for the issuance of marriage licenses in the Town of Hempstead are mandated by the provisions of the New York State Domestic Relations Laws.

The marriage section of the Hempstead Town Clerk's office is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Applicants should arrive prior to 4:15 p.m. Both applicants must appear in person. Two forms of ID are required (one must be valid photo ID). Marriage license applicants whose previous marriage(s) ended in divorce, annulment or death of spouse, must provide proof of dissolution of all previous marriage(s) by presenting a certified copy of Divorce or Annulment or certified copy of Death Certificate for each previous marriage.

Effective August 1, 2003 the New York State Department of Health has increased the marriage license fee to $40.00, which includes the cost of the marriage certificate. As an agent of the state, the Hempstead Town Clerk's office is required to charge the increased fee. A blood test is not required. Payment may be made in cash or by local check or money order made payable to Hempstead Town Clerk.

Re: Marriage License Question

Also, if you need a copy of your birth certificate - go to the town hall in the town you were born and you can get a copy in about 5 minutes... you'll need one anyway when you change your passport...

LOL...can you get your marriage license anywhere or does it have to be the town you live in or will be married in??

I called my local town hall and they said we need our birth certificates, but if FH doesn't get his in time maybe we can try a location that just asks for your drivers license....

Re: Marriage License Question

I actually spoke to the Clerk's office at the Town of Hempstead this afternoon and she told me that a drivers license & passport are OK....don't need a birth certificate if you have those.

I think you need the original. It should only take about a week to get a new one though. Good luck!

Me too!! Go to the town hall in Rockville Centre, they make you fill out a form and it will only take a day or two to get the BC in. I did it twice, once for my passport and then again for my marriage license.
