my only issue is...how on earth do you not sell after hearing something like that?
just b/c some schmuck opened his big fat mouth means that she has to sit on that info and suck up the loss?
I know thats the law and she was found guilty of it...but come on...how many of us would not sell?
The WOMAN has hundres of millions of dollars.... You win some you lose some. What she did was COMPLETELY unethical. I mean she was a BROKER!!! Not too mention the head of a public company. I can't wait till the lawsuits start coming... she owes her SHAREHOLDERS big time because what she did while CEO of a public company cost alot of people $$$$$$$$.
All for a few hundred thosuand~~~ GREEDY!!!!
THANK YOU!! I just wrote that she was a broker and should have known better!

I think it's 5 years per COUNT maximum. I don't think she'll serve any time anyway. She'll get a big fine, a suspended sentence and community service. That's my guess at least.
I totally agree!

Re: MARTHA GUILTY
Too bad she is not hooked up like D!ck Cheney, who took the people investigating his shady company dealings out to dinners etc. I agree that Martha broke the law, but this is a double standard.
ETA- its funny that I cannot write Di ck Cheneys name on the boards

Re: MARTHA GUILTY
someone in my office just got an email that said: Martha is going to jail because she's a b*tch. She's going to serve 5 years in jail for being a b*tch. And O.J. is laughing his a$$ off right now because he killed 2 people with a knife and he's playing golf right now.

Re: MARTHA GUILTY
I don't know... she deserves to be found guilty, but I feel like the prosecutor really targeted her and that the effort, time and taxpayer money put into it would be much better spent against the likes of worldcom, enron and arthur anderson, not martha and sam waksal. Waksal cancer drug was fianlly approved... who should we be focusing on, Waksal who just put out a cancer drug, or the CEO of Enron, who wipes his butt with linen? Martha, who did what many of us would have done, or Arthur Anderson who cooked the books?

Re: MARTHA GUILTY
this is my 2 cents:
i think the entire trial was complete and utter BS. yes - she did wrong - but what would you have done????? if someone told you a stock you held was going to tank - would you sit on that?? probably not.
what really gets me is that the men of enron and worldcom are still out there. these are men that bankrupted companies out of their own greed. the collapse of enron destroyed the pension of thousands and thousands of workers. not to mention what it did to one of the world's oldest accounting firms. the majority of men involved in these scandals are still out living the good life.
IMO - martha has already paid her punishment. the value of her company has tanked and she had to step down. when your company is YOU, and you are forced to step down, game over for you.
to make martha serve jail-time is pointless - the damage is already done.

You cant compare what we would do to what she would do. We are not in her position!!! Would I persoanlly have traded probably YES because I AM AN AVERAGE JOE!!! I am not a CEO of Public company and a BROKER!!!
She is an extremely intelligent woman, she knew what she wasdoing and the consequences.

of course i can - we are all bound by the same laws and regulations. the fact that she was a broker and i'm not is irrelevant. ignorance isn't a defense.

Re: MARTHA GUILTY
I haven't followed the trial closely, but the fact that she risked her whole career for $52,000 (I heard that was all she made when she traded it) is so stupid. not to mention when the verdict came out her company stock plumented, she lost $183 million dollars because she owns like 62% of it or something. money, money, money, the love of it-is the root of alll kinds of evil!

Re: MARTHA GUILTY
I don't think she was treated different because she was a woman. There are plenty of male CEO's who have been thrown in jail or fined because of insider trading.
Truth is she commited a crime-insider trading. They didn't have enough evidence against her to pin her to it so they dropped that charge and went after what they knew they could nail her own. Yes it's stupid that she gets nailed and other people don't. BUt that's how our justice system works. If your lawyers can prove your innocence even if you commited the crime than our system says your innocent.
Just because other people have done a lot worse doesn't mean that she should walk free. She commited a crime and she should be punished. And it's not like she's going to a jail with murders and sex offenders. Have you seen the jails they are talking about? Air conditioning, art classes? Doesn't sound too awful to me.
