Which side of maui is better? Wailea or Kaanapali or other? I really don't know anything about them, so any help would be appreciated.

I loved Wailea...seemed nicer to me, more intimate. That would be my choice but then again we didn't stay in kanaapali..just visited...wailea is so pretty!

Grand Wailea is beautiful.
We stayed half the time in Kaanapali (at the Sheraton, highly recommnd) and half in Wailea (at the Marriott).
There is more to do in Kaanapali as far as shopping/restaurants but Wailea is more of the resort/upscale area.
Both are nice, I would make sure if you are staying in one location to definitely visit the other.

How did you like the Wailea Marriott? How recently were you there?
they're starting renovations soon and they'll be done by the time i go... so hopefully it will be even nicer.
Any particular restaurants or excursions that you'd recommend?

We were there during renovations (so we got a reduced rate and one of the restaurants was closed). It seemed more like a family resort than a couples resort. We did meet other couples on their HM but there were a lot of families with kids (probably because it was during summer vacation). They don't really have their own beach though. There is a beach just north and just south (that is shared with the Grand Wailea). The food is good and there is a free appetizer at sunset everyday. There are 2 pools and 2 jacuzzi's that are really nice overlooking the water. The sunsets there are amazing. Here's a few pics from the Marriott:
I would definitely go to Haleakala at sunrise and hike into the crater. It's a totally amazing experience and like nothing you can see/do anywhere else.

We just got back from Hawaii on Friday. We spent 5 nights in Wailea. We loved it. We stayed at the Four Seasons, which was amazing. The Grand Wailea alos looked really nice. I stayed in Kaanapali many years ago and preferred Wailea, but both areas are very nice. You can't go wrong. We loved Maui.

I vote for the south side of the island. I have stayed in Kihei and in Wailea. I did tour the other parts of the Island and loved the weather and beaches on the south side the best. But like other posters have said-it's Maui, you can't go wrong!!!!

i loved the kaanapali area---the whole island is awesome!! i vote kaanapali over wailea--but i don't think you can go wrong w/either choice--i think that the kaanapali area is located by more activities though

Re: Maui? which side is the best?
For anyone who has stayed at Grand Wailea...did you love it? I have done so much research on tripacvisor.com and the reviews are just so mixed. Says it is always filled with so many kids and that the rooms are old and in major need of updating/renovating. Any advice would be appreciated.
I am torn bet Grand Wailea and Fairmont Kea Lani which I've heard is amazing!
Doing the 4Seasons on Big Island so don't want to do 4Seasons on Maui as well - I heard that 4Seasons is not that great. Heard the one on Big Island is amazing.

Re: Maui? which side is the best?
We had the experience of a lifetime at the 4S Maui...on the Club Level, we were treated unbelievably! The club lounge: food and drink all day long, and not bottom-shelf stuff! Gourmet food, top shelf drinks, great wines. Our room overlooked Molokini...it was so beautiful. For us, the GW and the KeaLani were much more busy (at least at the time we went in August) with a lot more families. Since we prefer the more laid-back type of vacation, we liked Wailea better than Kaanapali, but we did visit there for a day.

Re: Maui? which side is the best?
thanks for the info.
For those who have been to Maui - is Wailea or Kanaapali closer to or further away from where you do the sunrise bike ride down the volcano? I have different people telling me diff. things...on the map Wailea looks closer but someone told me it's not...??? I'm confused! They are telling me Wailea is too far from everything on Maui.

Re: Maui? which side is the best?
i stayed in the kaanapali area b/c i felt it was closer to everything! as far as the bike ride down--i can't really remember how close it was b/c i was still half sleeping! they pick u up soooo early no really,i remember the ride being pretty quick (but maybe i dosed off??HA!) it wasn't a bad ride-i was very excited so maybe that's why it went quicker!--just very cold once you get there! so if you are not doing a tour dress warm and bring the hotel blanket!! it is beautiful, amazing, and not to be missed!
