How are you and FH planning on dealing with money and bills and who pays for what. How much goes into joint accts and how much left in personal accts. We are planning on sitting down this week and tackle this just curious how everyone else is handling it.
BTW: We make about the same give or take a few thousand.. so that's not an issue.
TIA for responding to the horribly personal question.

Re: May be too personal but...
we have seperate finances....I know thats odd to most people but I prefer it that way it makes me comfortable...we split all the bills....we do have a joint savings account we just opened that we will both put x amount a paycheck into it ....but otherwise we have seperate.

Re: May be too personal but...
My fh is a mortgage broker and very good with finances. As soon as we are married he is taking over the finances. We will have a joint checking and savings and my check will get directly deposited. He will pay all the monthly bills for the 2 of us and put some leftover into our savings.
I want nothing to do with this process so I am totally looking forward to July

Re: May be too personal but...
Well we just bought a house so there are a lot of bills that both of us have to pay or split or pick and choose who pays for what..and then there are the dreaded credit cards that each of us have to pay for on our own.
Just a little confusing

Re: May be too personal but...
fh and i each have a separate checking account and then a joint savings account which is linked to our sep. checking accounts. We each but 'X' amount of dollars in the savings account as soon as we get paid....then we each pay our individual bills and whatever is left over goes into the savings account or towards a night out or whatever. And then whatever money we get for like bday and holidays we put in the savings account. it works pretty good for us right now...When we move in together we will have a ajoint checking account

FH will give me money every week to put in our account and I will put $$ in there as well. I am going to manage all the finances. We haven't figured out exact numbers but it really doesn't matter.

Re: May be too personal but...
my checks go into the bank so i pay all the bills - i do everything online and DH is like a little old man that just doesnt trust the internet LOL so it works out great for us
DH is responsible for spending money - if we go somewhere he pays for everything ( and always has )
we have a joint account where we put our wedding money but that is only for savings
we technically have different accounts but all of the money is considered 'our money'

Re: May be too personal but...
FH and I have a joint account for the wedding that will be our 'house' accountonce we get married. It's basically the account all home expenses get paid out of (mortage, cable, heat, car payments, insurance, etc.)
We are each still keeping our sepereate account also for our own stuff (shopping, hobbies, etc.)
We'll be splitting our check 75/25.
I'll probably be the one paying out the bills and doing the liquid money saving. He'll be investing and looking at our retirement funds.
Edit - We will consider everything our money even the seperate accounts. Even now we consider it that way...he has an easier time with saying 'our' $$ than I do though

Sounds like what we would end up doing I think.

Re: May be too personal but...
we live together but pretty much keep our finances seperate.....FH makes significantly more than me so he pays the majority of the bills - rent, car payment, car insurance, school loans, things like that as well as the payments to JT for the wedding and some other wedding related expenses. i pay for groceries, utilities, cable, gas, our land mortgage, and wedding deposits. We both keep seperate checking and saving accounts but also have a joint account that is used as a 3rd savings account - since we each have our own savings. we are both responsible with our money and have no debt the only time i see things changing is if i stop working when we have children - but that is very far off down the road!
ETS: when we go out FH almost always pays but we do consider everything 'OUR' money - FH makes it - I spend it no just kidding! I actually have more money in my savings account than he does!

Re: May be too personal but...
I make quite a bit more than FH. His money goes into our piggy bank and its being saved for the HM. My money is being applied to saving for the wedding itself. When we're married We plan on opening one joint account and both put in the same percentage of our pays, the rest put in our own personal accounts.

We opened a joint account and right now we are putting matched deposits into the joint account for the wedding. I think after we get married we're going to pool most of our money together, and pay for stuff together. regardless of who makes more money, marriage is about sharing your life together, so why not your finances.

For now, I pay mine, he pays his and we will probably keep it that way after we're married until we buy a house, then we'll combine our accounts. I pay everything online, I don't even have checks anymore, haven't for years. He likes to call the company and make a payment. Weird weird weird...too time consuming for me.

Re: May be too personal but...
As soon as we moved in together, all of our money was pooled into one bank account - we have a checking and savings , we both have access to them . We consult each other with purchases over 30$ , because :
1. we are saving for a wedding /honeymoon ect 2. I need the structure- my financial situation was terrible until FH , so we both discuss everything

we opened a joint checking and savings after our eparty. every month we deposit 25% of our monthly salary into the account. and then we have our own accts. we dont live together yet, so i dont know what we'll do once were married and paying bills, but i hiope this helps. btw all wedding expenses come out of the joint acct (unless our parents offer to treat)

Re: May be too personal but...
we have our own separate accounts/finances - but he was in school for the last 7 yrs living in Boston. we are going to open a joint account after the wedding - in the meantime I am paying for most of the wedding (since he doesn't have a job yet!), and when he starts working in July, I'll probably be responsible for paying the bills -- though we will discuss savings, debt repayment (student loans), and larger purchases....
For the most part though I don't think we will ever fully pool everything into one.
