How are you and FH planning on dealing with money and bills and who pays for what. How much goes into joint accts and how much left in personal accts. We are planning on sitting down this week and tackle this just curious how everyone else is handling it.
BTW: We make about the same give or take a few thousand.. so that's not an issue.
TIA for responding to the horribly personal question.

Re: May be too personal but...
honestly... we each are keeping our personal accounts and then have a joint savings account. FH is handles paying the bills, I handle our budget and sticking to it. We live together so we are ironing out stuff still.

Re: May be too personal but...
right now we keep our finances separate although we live together. we plan on combining our finances though. FH will probably keep tabs on it because he likes to track his spending and investments and I recently bought him Quicken. I have more $$ in savings but he likes taking care of that stuff so why not? We are both responsible with our money.
Once I graduate I'll be making 2-3x his salary but I don't know that it will be forever, and I might work part time or take some time off when we have kids down the road. I don't want to fight over 'my money v. your money' so i'm looking fwd to it just being 'our money'
still not sure if we will have separate accounts too or how that will work, but im not really worried about anything. i'll see what FH wants to do

Re: May be too personal but...
ty for this post... I have so many issues .FH makes about 2 times what I do, but I have so much debt I am so resistant to him paying for everything but he wants to. Even getting me gifts... such a struggle!!!! we are planning on having separate and joint accounts - I DO NOT want him paying for the debt I've accrued before I met him... but he'll end up putting more in the joint account as I barely have any money left over each pay period.

Re: May be too personal but...
we started with a joint savings about a year ago. after we bought our house, we opened a joint checking. both of our paychecks get directly deposited into that, and we pay all of our bills from that account. for us, it's actually much easier than maintaining seperate accounts.

Re: May be too personal but...
we have separate accts and a joint acct already. we will have a jt checking for bills, joint savings for house expenses, vactions, etc and then also keep our own savings accts

Re: May be too personal but...
FH and I really do need to sit down and discuss this. He makes more than I do and is way better at saving, too. He also has ultimately no debt! I am jealous! Right now I have been saving what I can while also trying to pay down my debts. Since FH's grandpa just passed away, their house is pretty much ours. FH just changed all the utility bills and whatnot into his name so we'll be starting to pay those soon. I'm thinking what'll happen is that he will pay the big bills and I will pay for groceries and maybe 1 or 2 smaller bills, in addition to my own bills. ACK! It's stressful just thinking about it!

Re: May be too personal but...
We just bought a house, and decided that joint checking and savings would be best. We put our pay checks as direct deposit to our checking and all of our bills are automatically deducted. In my opinion it is so much easier than handling everything separately. Plus we are pretty equal in money made, spent and saved.

Re: May be too personal but...
We have lived together for a few years now and split all of our bills(rent, cable, lipa, etc.) We have separate accounts like we always have. I honestly hasnd my paycheck over to FH and keep enough to pay for gas, groceries, etc. If I need more he gives it to me ...safer that way as I am a shopper

Re: May be too personal but...
Since I don't work all of our money is what FH makes. But we have a good system and I think it could work for anyone.
FHs pay gets deposited in a joint account. Then $1000 gets transferred into a personal account for him and $1000 gets transferred into a personal account for me. The money from our individual accounts is what we use for ourselves....ie gas, pocket money, my hair and nails (his haircuts), clothes, eating out. From my $1000 I also take out some and put a little into my savings. So basically we do whatever we want with our $1000.
We pay bills with the joint account and I also do a monthly grocery shop with that money. So anything for US ie mortgage, bills, grocery is used from the main account. Anything for 'I' is used for individual wants.

Re: May be too personal but...
Well we figured since we are joining our lives and becoming our own family we'd join everything ((haha i'm not sure I like it though!!)) but we have joint checking/saving....both our checks get used/deposited/spent...together. There are a few mutual funds / bonds that are in my name that will become joint after we officially tie the knot. Until then..........they're mine allllllllll mine YEA!! I feel like a crazy person today.

that sounds like a great system! i wanted to do something similar but DH is a money under the mattress kind of guy LOL so he didnt want his money in the bank unless it was for savings
