May be too personal but...

Original post by wifetobe

How are you and FH planning on dealing with money and bills and who pays for what. How much goes into joint accts and how much left in personal accts. We are planning on sitting down this week and tackle this just curious how everyone else is handling it.

BTW: We make about the same give or take a few thousand.. so that's not an issue.

TIA for responding to the horribly personal question.

my checks go into the bank so i pay all the bills - i do everything online and DH is like a little old man that just doesnt trust the internet LOL so it works out great for us

DH is responsible for spending money - if we go somewhere he pays for everything ( and always has )

we have a joint account where we put our wedding money but that is only for savings

we technically have different accounts but all of the money is considered 'our money'

We're the same, almost exactly lol. Not married yet but we've been living together for 4 years... we still have seperate bank accounts but all $ is considered 'our $', and we just pay the bills from whichever account has more money at the time. If one of us is getting low on money, we just take from one account and put it in the other. Whoever has money on them pays for things, there's no 'you pay' kinda thing, because whoever pays it's coming from the same money.

We actually had a joint account before we moved in together but it was at Astoria and they don't have any of those near where we live now...

We want a joint account once we're married just for conveninece purposes of not having to think about who has more money in their account to pay this bill from, etc...

ETA: I'm in charge of paying everything, whichever account I take it from... FH is brilliant, but finances just aren't his thing

before we got married, we each had separate checking and savings accounts, plus a joint savings acct for the wedding. we now decided to open a joing checking account, and that's where both of our checks will be deposited, and we will close out our individual checking accounts. we make about the same amt of $$, so everything will now be our $$. we will still keep separate as well as joint savings accounts though.

We opened a joint savings account over a year ago. Since we're buying a house we opened a joint checking and paying our bills from there. We both still have our own separate savings and checking accounts.

This is sooo hard!

FH is saver and I am not. I like to shop!

Anyway we are going to do a joint acct and pay bills out of it. All other purchases will be made on a credit card to accrue points.

Also I operate on a week to week basis as far as spending is concerned. In other words...no money no spending! Having a credit card to put all spending on could be deadly. I have tried to explain this to FH but he doesnt get it.

FH and I have a joint account for the wedding that will be our 'house' accountonce we get married. It's basically the account all home expenses get paid out of (mortage, cable, heat, car payments, insurance, etc.)

We are each still keeping our sepereate account also for our own stuff (shopping, hobbies, etc.)

We'll be splitting our check 75/25.

I'll probably be the one paying out the bills and doing the liquid money saving. He'll be investing and looking at our retirement funds.

Edit - We will consider everything our money even the seperate accounts. Even now we consider it that way...he has an easier time with saying 'our' $$ than I do though

That's exactly what we are doing. Right now I'm doing most of the saving because FH has a lot of debt to pay off and I'm better at saving money. I know that this is eventually going to be a big fight issue and we've already had some scwabbles about it.

Thanks girls...it gets tricky when you buy a house with someone...and still have your own debt to pay.
I know my Sister paid all the bills and her DH paid the mortgage..but since FH and I have similar salaries..that doesn't seem fair...

It's stressing me out a little. But I know we'll work it out. Buying a house and getting married all in the same year..NOT A GOOD IDEA!!!!

Very stressful money wise!!!!!

We have joint checking and savings. I really take care of all the finances, he just deposits his checks!

we have a joint account for 'family' stuff and personal accounts for like private shopping...like clohtes, makeup etc. We settled on a % of our paychecks that we would keep for ourselves and everything else goes into the joint one.

yes i dont consider it as 'i pay all the bills' etc it just that i am the one who is responsible for them

LOL its funny tho bc sometimes i will tease him that i pay for everything and he pays for nothing bc thats the way it looks on paper. . . i call him a gold digger

even yesterday, we bought our first car but it was put under my name and he is only on as a cosigner - he said he felt like a wife the guy even handed ME the keys, i felt so bad bc its HIS car technically!

I feel like this is like me. FH loves to physically go to the bank and stuff and pay...i do everything online. I figure we'll each have our things we take care of. I totally want to know what is going on financially in our relationship. But in the end no matter what its 'our money'

Yeah my FH lives in the dark ages too. Pays bills with checks and stuff...no online for him. But all my bills are paid on line or directly taken out of my acct.

we have seperate finances....I know thats odd to most people but I prefer it that way it makes me comfortable...we split all the bills....we do have a joint savings account we just opened that we will both put x amount a paycheck into it ....but otherwise we have seperate.

Hi, Kelly!!!!!!! Debi's Sis and her boyfriend, still waiting for proposal, do it that way, and plan to continue doing it that way. I'm not sure how Debi and Fred will manage the finances. Fred is a tax auditor, so it would seem he might handle the finances, but I really don't know. My Husband handles ours, and that's ok with me, I hate math! I like spending $. Think I'm normal, there. we're a little similar. I do EVERYTHING online, and FH is old school and goes to the bank. we finally opened a joint account but i'm pretty sure we're keeping our own accounts still, using the joint account for saving for a house etc., and splitting up certain bills that we will each pay.

FH is taking over cable, paying the phone bills, car payment, car insurance, and I think utilities but I don't remember. I'm paying the mortgage and maintenance...maybe we're splitting utilities.

all the wedding money is going in our joint account though and we're going to do direct deposit into it every month.

we plan on having a joint savings and separate checking accounts

Re: May be too personal but...

DH makes slightly less (not by much) than me.
When DH moved in after we got engaged, I got him a parking spot which he pays for for his car, we merged our cell phone bill so now we share minutes and split the cost, also the same with our cable/internet/home phone bill.
I plan on contributing to his car insurance payments, and also if the car upkeep.
As for joint account we're only using that for the wedding money we collected which we're splitting 50/50 and of course allocating half of that from each of us for a 'rainy day' fund or something that we want for the house but we both maintain (more for work reasons since our paychecks are Directly Deposited into our respective bank accounts) seperate checking/savings accounts.

Re: May be too personal but...

wow..im def odd one out

me and DH have had 1 checking and 1 savings account for almost 3 years..

we moved in together after 2 months and did it all then

im not working right now so im obviously not putting anything into it...but there is no need for our money to be seperate..we consult before major purchases or major bill pays..but thats it

its our money that we make alone and then share it together..

i pay all the bills as fas as our apt bills..his credit and debt and mine as well..its just easier for one person to be in charge of it all when all the money is pooled together

i really dont understand the need for seperate anything.especially after you are married..JMHO

it doesnt matter who makes more to me

my industry is suffering right now so i make not even $1000 a month and DH is making almost $3000 a week..that doest mean that whats his is his and vise versa

its all ours..he works for us and mob is to take care of everything else
