Maybe I am the only one who thinks this way... Maybe its cause I don't have kids yet?
Original post by june262004
So last night on the news they were talking about a bus stop in Brooklyn that had an ad for the show 'the L word' it had all the woman in the cast posing naked (but totally covered up) and people are FREAKING out and demanding it come down today! I don't see what the big deal is. Parents are saying they don't want to explain to their children what the L word means (Lesbian) I kinda think this is whats wrong with society today. This might be what makes children not like gay people!
Then they just had on the news a store that is in the same neighborhood as a middle school. The store sells lingere and whips and chains. The Lingere is in the window. People are demanding the store move. REALLY who cares. I hope these same people don't have HBO where you can here curse words and people being shot and naked girls on real sex and G sting Divas.
Im so sick of people 'freaking out' stupid crap. I still don't get the whole Janet Jackson things so what. It was 2 seconds and unless you were sitting on top of the tv or had Tivo you didnt see it (or the Internet) .
People on other country laugh at us for this reason!!!!!!!

HOLD IT HOLD IT HOLD IT!!!! I am going to have to STOP talking on here if people keep twisting my words around!!!!!! I NEVER said ANYTHING about HOMOSEXUALITY!!! I never said sex was EVIL... There are so many evil things going on in the world right now, such as blood and war... I dont need any more of that exposed to my little one on the street. I cant even watch the news! There is so much hate, and racism, murders, kidnappings etc!! Its just very sad. I wouldnt mind having positive things posted around... I said I could do without whips chains and bloodshed...

Kristin, I have to agree with you. I think that the problem is that many parents nowadays don't want to take responsibility for parenting their children. If there was a poster up for 'The L Word' IN their school, I can see having a problem with it. Parents can't shelter their kids from the whole world. They need to learn how to talk to them about these issues b/c they ARE out there.

Bunnymonkey:why don't these very same parents EVER freek out about violent video games and movies and behavior that is EVERYWHERE? Bloodshed has become far more acceptable than sex - it's so freaking backwards!
Sorry - I was kind of talking about video games and movies LOL Wrong topic I guess..

I totally agree with you. people need to be more open minded and teach their kids about life in general. I just don't understand sometimes how this country can be so liberal sometimes but yet so close minded at the same time. I'm a parent and I know that when Alia grows up and asks me a question about anything, I will be honest about it in the best way that she can understand.

This is something I've been ranting and raving about for years. It truly boggles my mind how in the States, parents have no problem exposing their children to the most violent of shows on TV, movies and video games (some of those games are HORRENDOUS) and yet make every effort in the world to hide their children from something that is so natural and beautiful, and shouldn't be shameful in the least bit - the naked human body and love, whether it be heterosexual or homosexual. It's breeding a generation of kids who think nothing of violence (as we all see on the TV every night), and who are sexually perverted because they were taught that sex and the human body are shameful!! I really think Europeans have it right - people walk around naked on the beaches and you can find nudity on TV at every hour of the day and the kids are fine with it. But, try to put on a violent show on TV and Euro parents get steaming mad - the way it SHOULD be!!

Well, heard today that some senators are trying to pass a law that will moniter what is said on SATTELITE RADIO and Premium movie channels like HBO!!!!!!!!!!
Can you imagine what Sopranos would be like??? Apparently, there is a lot of backing in congress for this. What is this world coming too?

Re: Maybe I am the only one who thinks this way... Maybe its cause I don't have kids yet?
I don't like the excuse of not wanting to explain what a lesbian is but I can agree that when Kiera is 3 or 4 not wanting her to see almost naked pictures on an ad and explaining sex to her at a very early age. I have no problem with cable having shows on late at night that are not acceptable for children. If I don't want my daughter to see something on tv I have control of that. But I can't control ads and if I as a parent choose that I don't want my young child to see sexual acts, whips, chains, or naked bodies that is my choice. So what do I do as a parent if it's on an ad for a bus? Not in an adult magazine, but a bus that my child can clearly see. Or in a window on a street that is in a fine neighborhood.
You can argue that sex and the naked body should be more accepted in this country. And maybe it should be. But for a young child to see certain things IMO is just not necessary. I don't care if a 10 year old sees it. But I'm talking about a very young child. Why does a 4 year old need to see whips and chains? Granted maybe the village in general is not the best place to have your 4 year old go, but I can see the argument.

Why? Because they'd sooner hire a Playstation to babysit their kids than a lesbian.

Jenn I agree. I just think 3 1/2 is TOO young to see certain images and to have to explain certain things... There will be a time and a place but a street corner shouldnt be one of them JMHO

I don't think it is the image that people find offensive, but the fact that it says 'The L word' COMBINED with it. If it were an ad for body wash that said 'Use this product and you'll have skin like us' noone would say BOO about it.

Re: Maybe I am the only one who thinks this way... Maybe its cause I don't have kids yet?
It doesnt have LESBIAN posted all over it. Why can't you just say it means LOVE?
Its funny (like I said before im not a mom) but I thought a child at 3 wouldn't be as bad as a 10 year old seeing it. 10 year olds remember a lot more I thought. You could just brush off what a three old does kinda and tell them I don't know and they'd forget about it and keep walking. Kids hear and see a lot worse in school.
I also think about the same sex parents who adopt children and all the negativity is making other kids look at them funny. I don't know.

This is simiar to the pic except the L word is writen in the middle (where the private areas would be) instead of the bottom.
Re: Maybe I am the only one who thinks this way... Maybe its cause I don't have kids yet?
7 1/2 years ago I went to see the Spice Girls in concert. Guilty pleasure, but I was *really* taking my boyfriend at the time because he just LOVED them. Yeah.
Anyway, so we're the two oldest people there without children (we were in our late teens). The girls have a song called 'Naked' for which they would get on stage and look like they were wearing nothing. They'd be in high backed chairs that were turned around, so all you could see were bare arms and legs. I have to say I was a little uncomfortable - did these women not know that their primary demographic was not yet in Middle School? None of the parents seemed to have a problem, and I know some overly protective parents who were there with their daughters personally. They didn't say anything to me about that.
I agree with you, Kristin, that if you don't want to explain what a Lesbian is, tell the kids that L stands for Love. That's what I thought it was before I heard anything about the show. You think a kid's gonna understand the complexities required to actually explain what lesbianism is? There are smart kids, but I don't think so.
This, once again, brought to you by the child who thought Material Girl was about Sewing.

Wow I do kinda see a problem with the spice girl thing. They catered to children (wether they liked it or not).
And BTW I thought Material Girl was 'cheerio girl' I use to walk around saying im a cheerio girl.
