Someone I know - wont say who - was telling me the other day that she is probably going to get a mermaid style dress for an upcoming wedding (not mine)
I was a little suprised...I thought only certain types of figures can pull that off
What do you girls think? What is the best body type for mermaid/trumpet style dress?

Re: Mermaid style
I think as long as you are skinny and in shape... doesnt matter how tall you are and it will look gorgeous!! Blehh... I'm gonna try to get myself into 1 of these, but I have a fat assss and pretty wide hips for my body It might emphasize it a lil too much...

Re: Mermaid style
id think thin and a little curvy would like great in a mermaid dress....i might look at mermaid or trumpet style dresses b/c i have a feeling a lines might look to big on me......but then again mermaids/trumpet might make me look to short.......but i think that the mermaid style would look the best on a real thin girl - but i notice that confident girls with big smiles and pretty faces can wear almost anything no matter what their body type!

Re: Mermaid style
IMO...I think you have to be super tall in slender for it to look good. I love the style but I am 5'2' and would look rediculous in it (not to mention half the skirt would probably need to be cut off)

Re: Mermaid style
I think if you have a flat tummy and are on the taller side you can pull it off. It is a style that I find accentuates your hips, so if you have big hips, I wouldn't choose a mermaid style.

Re: Mermaid style
i never thought i would try on a mermaid/trumpet gown..but i recently did..and to my surprise, i liked what i saw in the mirror...and so did my friends. i'm about 5'5' & street size of 4. maybe it was that specific gown, but it was really really flattering and didn't accentuate any of my 'bad' areas..but then again, i did have on SPANX. hahaha
i say, don't knock it till you've tried it on! you might fall in love w/ the gown and like what you see! nc82! - i say you try it on! it might look smokin' on ya!

Actually, height does make a difference. There's actually a certain height I think you're supposed to be so that the part that is supposed to hit you at the knee, does. If it hits you below the knee it won't look right and will also VERY movement constricting. You can get it altered but you'd probably have to do it hollow to hem. Def. give it a shot but this is what it says in most magazines and they tell you in the dress places.

The Mermaid: The slightly more outrageous cousin to the sheath, this style hugs the body and shows off your fabulous curves. The mermaid gown is fitted at the top through the hips, and flares out slightly at the top of the knee or mid-thigh. Another way we see this style is as a modified A-line with a trumpet or fishtail skirt. This style looks amazing on a number of body types, whether you're short or tall. The only requirement for a mermaid gown is that you must have curves.

Re: Mermaid style
To look taller: A dress with a high neckline and/or an empire waist will give the illusion of height. A short sleeved or sleeveless dress with long gloves will also elongate your bodice. Another neckline that usually flatters the petite woman is an off-the-shoulder or strapless necklines. Be careful not to choose a dress that overwhelms you. It helps to choose a gown that has the detail work around the neckline and the hem line. It draws the eye up and down the dress. Ball-gown styles or full dresses can easily swallow up a petite women or make them appear even shorter. Stay with a simple style such as a Sheath, mermaid or a slimA-line.

Re: Mermaid style
I don't think mermaid style dresses are just for the tall. Actually, I've seen plenty of petite women wear this style and look amazing. As long as you have the right body type for it and the right dress, it can look fabulous. Never discount something just because that's what's said--try it all on because it may surprise you.

it wont elongate your legs, bc the top part is long so your leg part the part where the bodice cuts off and leg part begs, theres a line and its past your hips and even below your butt, so means the illusion of your legs begins after your butt.
