Mermaid style

Original post by Miblove

Someone I know - wont say who - was telling me the other day that she is probably going to get a mermaid style dress for an upcoming wedding (not mine)

I was a little suprised...I thought only certain types of figures can pull that off

What do you girls think? What is the best body type for mermaid/trumpet style dress?

Hmm..maybe I'm looking at myself w/ rose-colored glasses. haha. I'm going to try on a trumpet gown again this week..I think I'll bring along a pair of high heels so I can see what I look like w/ shoes on.

IMO...I think you have to be super tall in slender for it to look good. I love the style but I am 5'2' and would look rediculous in it (not to mention half the skirt would probably need to be cut off)

yup same here, im 5'2, it would cut you in half and make you look shorter. I say tall, and in shape

Thats funny b/c all the articles i have read said it will do the opposite

Then try it on if you'd like. You should def. give it a shot like I said above. You should try EVERYTHING when you're looking for your gown as you never know what you'll end up falling in love with. Good Luck!

it wont elongate your legs, bc the top part is long so your leg part the part where the bodice cuts off and leg part begs, theres a line and its past your hips and even below your butt, so means the illusion of your legs begins after your butt.

Exactly. The way to elongate ANYTHING is through straight continous lines. Mermaid stop that 'line' at your knee. Will it look bad? Not necessarily. But like I said, you'll probably need to get it made hollow to hem so that it doesn't cut you off below the knee which it most likely will if you're not tall enough.

DO NOT LISTEN TO MAGAZINES.

Not everyone fits into one of five body types.

TRY ON EVERYTHING. Even if you think it might look terrible, everyone has a different body type and you do not have to be super thin and tall to wear a mermaid dress, you just have to feel beautiful and confident in it and that is ALL that matters. Screw everyone else.

I'm 5'5' and not a small street size but I'm wearing a sheath/mermaid style dress because I LOVE IT and I FEEL awesome in it.

Good Luck

I'm not tryin to argue... Just that I;ve been reading otherwise which doesnt make too much sense right?? And what does 'hollow to hem' mean? I'm not going gown shopping for quite a while but i was jus interested...

Re: Mermaid style

it wont necessarily look bad dont get me wrong...i just know i see a huge difference when i try a mermaid dress on and my MOH who is 5'8. Ill sit there and say oh wow this looks great on me then i see her and say oh so thats how it SHOULD look lol...it depends bc now they have so many different styles and cuts even for mermaid dresses...it goes even beyond height though. Here is some other info i found out, not sure if it applies to you or not.

Fish Tail & Mermaid
The mermaid style is quite fitted both at the waist and the hips; it then flairs out delicately at the base of the skirt below the knee. This skirt will hug very tightly at the waist and hips, flaring out from knee downward.

The fish tail is the mermaid style skirt with an extension of fabric at the bottom of the skirt at the back – effectively a small train.
Both styles suit the bride that has a slim to medium build and bust. You can not get away with this style successfully if you are large busted with small hips and delicate backside. You will appear top heavy.

This style is extremely elegant with a low cut back. This emphasises the figure and accentuates the curvature of the back and hips.

I wasn't either, i promise. You'll get different opinions everywhere, isnt' it fun? That's why I said, try everything on. When the lady showed me my dress on the hanger I said no way, don't even bother. When I put it on, I was amazed. It's fit and flare (which is another option you should look into if you like the mermaid style). It's fitted like a mermaid but instead of being fitted through to the knee, it hits just below my butt but doesn't go past and then flares out from there, but not a super-flare, it's more like a-line flare.
Hollow to hem basically means that they re-make the dress according to your height because it's more difficult to hem it. Mermaids are more difficult to hem if they hit you in the wrong place because it's not just the length they have to take off the bottom, they have to actually adjust the length of the different parts, i.e. the part that runs between your waist and your knee to bring that up to your knee.

umm, yeah, close enough. It hits me in the same place but the flair is alot narrower. I haven't actually seen a picture of it exactly, but pretty much. And the picture of I have is one of those awful contorted model poses so you can't even tell. Actually, in the pic I have it really looks like a super-poofy dress and it's so not.

I totally agree.... your body may fall into an overall average type, but just because you may have wider hips doesnt mean that you want to hide them!

Try everything on... wedding dresses ain't like regular dresses and you might be surprised at what is flattering and what isnt.

good luck

Re: Mermaid style

My friend is 5 feet and her mermaid gown looks great on her. I am 5'4 and I wanted a mermaid gown so badly, I thought they looked great on me, but I thought it was too dramatic for my low key wedding, so I got a sheath. I regret that decision. Kittythestray is, I believe, 5'4' and she rocked a mermaid gown. Check out her review.

Kitty's looked great but she had it straight and just pulled in the back a bit...the ones that have the line at the knee is different, usually mermaids are tight to the knee and have it come out alot by the knees, thats when if youre short it will look different.

I thought I looked just as good as the model in my dress and I am 5'2' and not even close to be consider skinny. I got so many complimelnts on my dress and i dont think anyone thought 'she should be a little taller to pull that off'

Re: Mermaid style

It definitely depends on the cut. I tried on a mermaid gown for the first time today and I LOVED IT! I'm just over 5'8, a size 4, I have no boobs, I'm fairly narrow but I DO have a butt so I thought I'd really hate it. The gown didn't flare out very far down, so my butt didn't look big at all and it really created hips where they should be!!!

My cousin who is 5'5, and is about a size 6 and has a very curvy figure and big boobs wore a mermaid gown and she definitely pulled it off. It was very fitted around her hips and butt but she was so confident in her gown she was SMOKIN' HOTTTT!
