Someone I know - wont say who - was telling me the other day that she is probably going to get a mermaid style dress for an upcoming wedding (not mine)
I was a little suprised...I thought only certain types of figures can pull that off
What do you girls think? What is the best body type for mermaid/trumpet style dress?

Yeah I agree girls
I was considering for my gown but hmmmmm
I'm tall (5'7') about 125lbs - but, small chested - is that a no - no for mermaid?
No because they can sew in cups so you would be fine in that sense. I am 5'6 and tried some mermaids on and they looked ok BUT only when I wore high heels. I am VERY hippy but otherwise slim so the style was flattering but my best friend by comparison who I LOVE dearly, tried one on. She is 4'10. it looked AWFUL simply because she doesn't have the height so the 'swoop' with the trumpet skirts gets lost on her. She would ahve had to either A) cut of all that part for the hem or B) Have it made rom scratch in petitte proportions and she would have been charged an OBSCENE amount. the sales people were against the idea. said she was better off spending money ona dress that flattered her body.

I thought I looked just as good as the model in my dress and I am 5'2' and not even close to be consider skinny. I got so many complimelnts on my dress and i dont think anyone thought 'she should be a little taller to pull that off'
You looked beautiful. Have to say though, 5'2 is not that small when you throw on heels AND you are pretty thin...good grief..reading these respones people think size 4 or 6 is NOT TINY? What the hell ladies! Marilyn Monroe was a 12 and she was considered a sex goddess...lets be a little kinder to ourselves.

i agree, infact they say it best flatters a curvy body. I think if you're thin but donthave curves it will look nice but seeing it on a curvy body does make a difference, for the more sheath type then i say if youre thinner its better

I think that you should try it on. I didn't think that mermaid would look good on me since I'm not thin, but every bridal shop i went to told me that mermaid is for me. My 1st fitting is in Jan so I'll post some pics. So pls just try it first, you'll be surprised!

one is less flared than the other. I can't remember which though. I'm thinking it's the trumpet that's less flared.

Re: Mermaid style
Im 5'7 and tried on a size 20 (i wear a 16 in real life)...the mermaid dress look gorgeous on me. I was so against trying it on but the bridal salon consultant insisted that I keep an open mind. I had been listening to everyone tell me I being plus sized should do aline but they all made me look so big all over. I tried on this mermaid style and it was perfect. It accentuated my curves...it did not hide them. I mean you cant hide what I have but it was perfect for me. It was not the dress...but now I knew what I was looking for. Trumpet and Mermaid are different also. One has a drop waist...but I say try on everything. Even stuff you wouldnt normally like...you never know.

IMO...I think you have to be super tall in slender for it to look good. I love the style but I am 5'2' and would look rediculous in it (not to mention half the skirt would probably need to be cut off)
hey now! I am 5'2 and I'm sooooo gonna pull it off... you dont know until you try it right?!?
I agree! I'm also 5'2' and wearing a dress with a trumpet skirt. I'm pretty thin and totally flat and found that the mermaid/trumpet shape looked the best on me. I tried on A-lines galore because that was supposedly the best fit, but none of them were flattering. I think I look taller in the mermaid shape.
Try everything on! You never know!

Re: Mermaid style
NC82 totally go for it!! I have the same body type as you and my dress is a mermaid/modified trumpet.
I envisioned a big ball gown for my wedding and tried on a bunch of a-line and ball gowns, but I just wasn't happy. After exhausting a bunch of options, the sales person that was helping me suggested a mermaid style. I didn't think that it would look good on me and insisted that it would be pointless, but she persuaded me that since I was already there, it wouldn't hurt to just try it on. After I put on the dress I was pretty shocked at how much I like the fit.
So if you are just shopping around, just try on anything would be my advice, you never know… the dress that you though wasn't the one, might look absolutely gorgeous on you!
Good luck!!

Re: Mermaid style
Mermaid style is more form fitted, while trumpet hugs your curves on your hips more, but flair out slightly at the bottom. Pic 1 is an example of mermaid, pic 2 is Trumpet
I never would have thought about trying on this type of dress and exp not in lace but the woman at the bridal shop handed me one to try on. I saved it for last because I totally thought I would hate it. To my suprise once I tried it on I LOVED it. It is the dress I ended up buying. I'm only 5'4. I wear usually a size 4 but got a 6 in this just in case. I'm not tall and I'm a little hippy but I think it looks great. It is very flattering suprisingly.

Re: Mermaid style
i think you should go for it and try it on... at 5'7 and 125 you should be the perfect body type for a mermaid dress....
I tried one on at 5'2 (with about 10 more lbs than I need) and it was not a FLATTERING DRESS!!!!!...... The gown didn't 'hit' the right areas because of my height....... and i felt like it showed all my flaws....... but that's just me!
but I would try it on and see.. you have nothign to lose!!!
