Mom Dress (sorry, long)

Original post by CrisiDrue

Ladies, I need your help!!! My mom lives in FL & has never been to a NY wedding, & she doesn't really understand the hoopla that goes along with it.

Well, she got a dress that's really beautiful, but not nearly formal enough for our wedding. I don't know what to do. She already paid the full amount for the dress, & I don't even know where she could go to get a formal gown. She's not comfortable wearing strapless or spaghetti straps, and doesn't want to be uncomfortable. What do I say to her? and how do I say it without hurting her feelings?

PS She's very stubborn when she doesn't want to do something

My mom's dress is not half as fancy as most girls on here, but we're planning on 'dressing it up' with some sparkly accessories :]

I think you could actually work with that dress to make it look dressier with the right accessories - a sparkly necklace, some strappy shoes, beautiful earrings, etc. If you think your mom is going to be really upset about wearing something more formal, maybe you can consider suggesting the jewelry/shoes option instead?

Very True... Maybe put a big beautiful crystal and pearl broach on it near her cheast or at the bottom of the first tier!

I have seen worse... Its not as bad as I think you think it is... doest that make sense?

ETA Wait... You are also getting married in the afternoon right??? it says 12:00 I think that might be a suitable dress for an afternoon wedding (more so for a guest, but you can def dress it up for your mother)...

Says 12AM - which is midnight... she probably never changed the time when she put the date in!

I am an Idiot! hahahah

No, it's actually 3pm ceremony, 7pm CH on a Saturday night. Not sure where it says 12pm? I'm thinking of telling her that she can wear this dress to the ceremony (jazz it up a bit w/ accessories) so her shoulders are covered & she's comfortable. The dress is very light & flowy so she won't be itchy & dying of heat b/c it's an August wedding, & she can buy a more formal gown to get changed into btwn ceremony & CH so her money's not wasted. And I'll tell her that we'll buy the more formal dress so she can't use money as an excuse.

With all due respect, do you really think it's your place to tell your mom what she can wear when?

She's an adult - can't she decide what she wants to wear?! I'd never tell my mom she can or cannot wear something!

I also don't see anything wrong with the dress. She should be comfortable and she'll look beautiful. If she's uncomfortable, she won't look nearly as nice.

No, I'm not gonna jump all over you for this.......

My FMIL did that for my FSIL's wedding. She got a dress at Macy's that was more conservative & she was comfortable in, then she had a more formal gown for the reception. My FMIL hasn't gotten her dress yet, so I have nothing to show her. But my FH spoke to her to make sure that she doesn't upstage my mom, so shes going a different route with her dress now. I don't want my mom to feel uncomfortable, but do you really think she can jazz it up with jewelry? Shouldn't the dress be floor-length (it's a 2-piece outfit, so we could get a different skirt - it's alfred angelo). I'm not from NY so this is all new to me too, but I'm just concerned about her feeling like an idiot for being under-dressed.

I think that dress is fine! I had a friend who's mother wore a linen suit at a wedding at a very upscale venue. As long as your mom is comfortable and feels beautiful in the dress, I say just let it be.

truthfully, that dress can work in both formal weddings, and more casual.... I wouldn't fuss over it. she likes it, it fits her, and she paid for it. She can easily glam up that dress with a gorgeous pair of shoes with some 'bling' and some nice jewelry and purse.

I wouldn't bring it up, it may only upset her... JMO

I think the dress you posted is fine.
My mom got a fancy dress, but my MIL lives upstate and did not. Neither of them looked out of place and everything was fine.

CrisiDrue, I think your mom's dress is very pretty. Just like everyone suggested, nice jewelry and nice shoes will make your mom look very elegant. Don't forget your mom probably will have her hair and make up done so she will look amazing.

Maybe to help her understand the whole 'ny wedding' thing, show her pics and stuff from this site, so she knows what to expect.....

I want her to feel comfortable on our wedding day, but I don't want her to feel weird if she's under-dressed. I'm going talk to her & let her know that many of the guests will probably in more formal attire, & send her some pics from this site of the whole 'ny wedding' thing, so she has an idea of the formality. And then she can decide whether she'll be comfortable in this dress. Thank you all for your opinions & advice!
